Description
Hello there!Villain Month turns 21! I give you the Transylvanians of Rocky Horror Picture Show, a cult-classic musical with B-grade Sci-fi films and rock 'n roll in mind.
Alright, so I was sitting down trying desperately to think of the next villain to draw. I half-sketched a dozen things with much dissatisfaction, but then the idea to illustrate the Transylvanians (from left to right) Riffraff, Frankenfurter, and Magenta. Frankenfurter is on a quest to make a man with blond hair and a tan, good for relieving his "tension," and is throwing a huge bash in his mansion/lab/spaceship for all of his friends to celebrate the completion of his boy-toy, Rocky. Riffraff and Magenta are Frankenfurter's servants (or so it seems). Amidst all of this mess, poor Brad and Janet (not pictured here), a very vanilla, all-American, Christian couple is entangled in this story of sex, lies, intrigue, and meatloaf.
I was going to draw Columbia (those of you who remember anything about the film will remember the yellow sequin top hat and the annoying, high-pitched voice), but she's not really much of a villain and I'm pretty sure she's human, too, whereas these guys are aliens from Transexual, Transylvania. Yeah, no joke.
The film is definitely the "Grindhouse" of musicals. It's a really fun movie with great music if you just check your brain and inhibitions at the door. Many people still get together on weekends to go see it at small art house theaters and take part in a sort of audience participation where many lines are added and substituted by the audience for the sake of a few laughs. Oh, and there's toast, too. ;D
I should add that this movie is pretty special to me. My parents used to perform the show live when I was a kid. My mom almost always played Frankenfurter (yes, she was a woman playing an alien playing a man playing a woman) and my father usually played Brad, if not always. Some kids have memories of their mommies and daddies getting home from work and talking about the big promotion. I have memories of my dad cracking his rib while doing a crazy split in women's lingerie. Yeah...and you wonder why I'm messed up. ;D
This image isn't entirely accurate and I didn't have a reference for the actors, so take it for what it is. I hope you guys like it! Let me know what you think.
Adobe Photoshop CS, about an hour and a half total.
PS: If anyone thinks I should slap the good ol' Mature Content filter on this one since it is a bit crude, please let me know and I will. Until then, I don't think it's that offensive.
The Transylvanians are (c) Paramount Pictures (I think, correct me if I'm wrong please), and this image is (c) me, Andrew T. Green. Don't steal, because stealing is icky and will make you icky if you do it. That's what Jesus told me.

Hey, my mom used to dress up as Frankenfurter every Saturday night (I think) to perform, so there's no good reason why you shouldn't dress as him for Halloween. ;D

My mom bought the movie when I was 8 and we watched it together and I loved it! I didn't understand most of it because I was so little, but when I watch it now I can't believe she let me watch it x]
We were planning on going to a little theater and watch it, but life throws curve balls, ones that suck >.>
I love them in your style! The shading is really awesome and I love the textures in some of the shading

Your mom sounds pretty cool. I had seen the film at a younger age than 8 because of my parents, and I didn't turn out too messed up. XD
I'm really glad you like the image!

this is just plain fucking AWESOME!
I like your take on them- even though it doesnt look EXACTLY liek them- you know who they are (and even the BG is the lab with the red vault! so great!)
I like that you explained it for all the kiddies who have no clue of this B-movie classic! And thats AWESOME your parents were part of the shows! I've been to a few and they are so fun.

I'm glad you like it!
My comments on my pieces tend to be really detailed since I always assume people know nothing of the source material (be it my own original characters or fan art, like this one). I hope I've inspired some to go rent the film! That's ultimately the idea, right? ;D

My parents encouraged me to watch Rocky Horror. So the first time I saw it I was about 12 and I watched it with them.
Special memories
It's good that you left out Columbia because you're right... she's not really a baddie. She's too lover-ly

Your PARENTS provided the floor show?? That's friggin' awesome. Man, my sister and I had to take a deep breath of "no, they'll still love us" before even showing Rocky Horror to our own parents.
Yay for the RHPS looove.

Yep! My parents are pretty awesome sometimes. I'm absolutely proud to say that they paraded around in drag on stage in front of actual people often enough to matter. And sang.

Frankenfurter on 'roids. Priceless! You've captured the spirit of the three spot on.
Just watched part of the movie the other day on IFC. No matter how hard I try, I never seem to be able to catch the first half. But, as a Meat Loaf fan and weird person in general, I couldn't stop grinning. (My mouth still hurts - not very used to smiling for long periods of time).
The movie is just too awesome for words (from what I've seen... >.>

Ooh, you should totally catch it from the beginning! You're missing the legendary singing lips title sequence (with a fantastic song) and the hilarious opening number between Brad and Janet. About when do you usually walk in?
Yeah, fantastic movie. ;D

Usually at the dinner scene: "What a guy - Makes you cry - Und I did". But I actually got to catch it in time to see where Frankenfurter and Brad... er... yes. That provoked a fit of giggles and 'wtf?!' - Wikipedia can only prepare you so much.
Hmm, would that be the Time Warp? Hearing the song on MaxTrax Party was where I first heard of Rocky Horror Picture Show many years ago. It's only started showing on the array of channels I get this year, so I'm very pleased (despite my bad luck). A childhood dream come true.
Soooo... Your mother was Frankenfurter (minus the five o' clock shadow ), and your father was Bard.... *in disbelief* They must've had so much fun with THAT. It gives you a one-up in bragging rights concerning your parents versus the parents of others!

DrewGreen In reply to Deadmist [2008-11-08 23:38:31 +0000 UTC]
The opening sequence is called "Science Fiction (Double Feature)" and is just amazing. The musical number between Brad and Janet is at the beginning, right after the opening title. It's called "Dammit Janet," and is very catchy and really funny.
Wow, you really need to see the whole thing. It's so much fun!

Riff Raff and Magenta look great, but I think Frankenfurter is a little off. He doesn't quite look like himself (I think the one in the film had a slimmer body type and longer weirder hair).

DrewGreen In reply to CaptainQuirk [2008-10-23 05:24:09 +0000 UTC]
Glad you like the henchpeople! As I said in my comment, it's not really meant to represent the actors portraying the characters so much as it is meant to represent the characters themselves. For what is essentially a glorified doodle meant to fill a day of Villain Month, I think it's good enough, personally. ;D
But for the record, you're right, I'm positive Tim Curry was slimmer in the film and that his hair was a bit longer than that.

BRB WATCHIN' THIS MOVIE NOW.
I've heard and seen so much about this movie and I really want to see it! This picture just makes me want to see it more, haha.
I loooove Magenta's face in this. There's something very distinct about it. It seems coquettish and at the same time kind of devious. The textures in the shading are great too! Looks like you had a ton of fun with this one.

Haha, oh man, I'm so excited to see you draw meatloaf now! This'll be great. Your villian month in general has been superb, to let you know. I thought I should let you know, cause when I read your latest journal, I was pretty bummed at my own behavior as a DA watcher, in general. I love your work, but to be honest, I'm usually pretty intimidated by artists like yourself. I don't like commenting on every piece, even if I love them all, because most of the people I watch that have your amount of skill don't generally reply back or even acknowledge ANYONE who isn't an amazing artist or well known on DA. I do understand that some artists are so busy that they can't commit to replying to every comment, but it does stop me from randomly gushing over great deviations.
I really admire the fact that you would reply to every single person who comments on your piece, however. It shows a lot about how you view your fans. Thanks, man. :]

I try really hard to get back to everyone at least in a minimal capacity. I don't think it's fair to expect people to comment on my pieces but not give them so much as a "thanks" in return, and I'll never understand the mentality of simply not bothering.
Honestly, aside from probably an hour after I get home from work, I'm busy until about 9 to 10 o'clock. After that, I'm usually up for a bit, probably trying to do some kind of artwork (not playing as many video games as I used to, though). I'd consider myself relatively busy, but I make time to show appreciation to people who like my stuff. That's important to me, and I'm glad you recognize that!

Holy smoke! Your parents used to perform it? That's crazy!
I've only seen it once when I was pretty young, but I was pretty disturbed by it. I suppose if you grew up on it it wouldn't seem that way.

DrewGreen In reply to BAMillustration [2008-10-21 22:10:49 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, it was more my mom's thing but my dad participated anyway. I know he enjoyed it, and for all the right reasons (as opposed to the wrong ones). The troupe they performed with was apparently pretty popular in that part of Florida (where we lived at the time), and my mom says that Meatloaf actually performed with them once!
It's a very strange movie, but it's definitely not as strange when you grew up with it like I did. Having watched the movie recently, though, I can't believe my siblings and I were allowed to watch it as kids.
