Yes. While a search will always tell you have many Deviations your search found, you can only browse the 1st 1,000 most recent or most popular results whenever you run a search on DeviantArt. The old limit used to be 100,000.

google, yahoo, facebook, and a million bunches of other websites can handle more than 1,000 search results.. why can't DA do so? with this new feature, the unrecognized artists will be more unrecognized until they fade into the the shadows of DA...
"This change was brought about because of technical limitations. However, with the 1,000 search result limit now implemented, we're able to provide a faster and more stable search function to deviantART's community." yadda yadda yadda...
lame excuses...
I protest, i say i protest!!! who's feelin' me??!

I have just one minor correction. Google actually does not let you browse more than the first 1,000 results for any search query. As for Yahoo, Facebook and other sites with a search feature, I'm not so sure.
At any rate, I would say the fact that the search system on DeviantArt still crashes frequently is a good testament at just how unexpectedly-bad the problem is.

So, why are these in place, exactly? On KnowYourMeme I've heard "optimizing performance" touted as a reason for their page browsing caps. Though, at least here we get the "Discover" pages to find new artists.

Ah! The search limit was enacted to try and significantly reduce the occurrence of DeviantArt's servers crashing whenever a search query is run. Sadly, despite the new limitation, the search engine still crashes frequently.

Every single art community comparable with deviantArt's size has a search cap, including YouTube and Flickr. Frankly, dA has been quite spoiled that it's lasted this long. But as it continues to grow, it would have had to change no matter how many people complained if the search engine was going to be able to stay up at all.

I would say the one reason that irks me the most, and the only reason I started up another protest Group in the first place and made this stamp, was the fact that the staff said nothing about the search limit at all for weeks after its deployment. A news article I wrote ended up being the first announcement of any kind related to the search limit. The staff finally did respond, but it was a blog post at #HQ, not a site-wide announcement. Just like there were no site-wide announcements letting the entire community know about the then-upcoming deployment of DeviantArt Version 7. DA V7 and the search limit were nasty surprises to many Deviants.
I do understand why the search limit is there. I do have experience with business and infrastructure. Nonetheless, the staff have got to be more forthcoming about big changes to the site, like this limit of 1,000 results on searches for Deviations, Prints and Groups.
Looks like the search limit may have been a bandage on a gaping wound, if you get my drift. Especially as the search system still fails frequently despite the new limitations.
If I had the permissions, I would write my own site-wide notice and do my best to be fair to both sides of the debate. Instead, it seems the staff have left it up to members of DeviantArt to spread the news of changes to this place that effect a huge chunk of the community.
Can you agree that we should be told about changes when they are made or when major changes to DeviantArt are going to be deployed, instead of surprising the community with them and ending up with swarms of irate users on their hands? I think the staff would save themselves a lot of trouble if they would keep the community better-informed.
I never did get an E-mail about how an unknown about of Deviants had private information stolen from one of DeviantArt's affiliates. Nor was there a site-wide notice on this problem. This is huge! I certainly have noticed a substantial increase in the amount of garbage I get at my main E-mail account now.
In short bad communication from the staff about considerable changes, problems and new limitations at DeviantArt is not acceptable, especially to the paying members of this community. Poor communication with the community is the only reason why I led civil protests, not trolling or flame wars, against the search limit and DA V7.
Perhaps administration was unprepared for the level of growth that DA has experienced in the last year? Companies have made errors like that before. Like how AT&T did not anticipate the amount of traffic their wireless voice and data networks would have to handle with the advent of bandwidth-hungry smartphones, such as the iPhone.
Well, sorry for the long-winded response. I only hope I conveyed my thoughts about the search limit and some other issues in a civil manner. Thank you for your time.

Staff has admitted that making no announcement was a mistake, and I agree with you that it was a mistake. But I'm not talking about how the change came about but why the change came about. Announcing it to the community would have still created a lashback and the change would still be necessary. How the community reacted wouldn't have changed that.
Imo, there's a big difference between saying "couldn't you have told us this change was coming" and "down with the 1000 search limit."
As for the rest, I don't think anyone could have expected the increase of hits on dA. With the exception of Flickr, which is specialized, no other general art community has reached the size dA has, ever.
I have no doubt that they intend to clean up the search more, add some new features and tighten up how the server responds to queries, but in the mean time, the staff are getting a lot of undue hatred, both for things that were mistakes and things that they have no control over. And a lot of the latter.
That's my take on it. Thanks for your time too.

Oh? When did the staff say that? May I please a link to the blog post or wherever you saw that?
Imo, there's a big difference between saying "couldn't you have told us this change was coming" and "down with the 1000 search limit."
Agreed. I was very frustrated at the time I made this stamp. I was running a deep search for fan-art to feature in my main Group, #Gardevoirs-Sanctuary, [Not an easy task when there are so many mislabeled Deviations that have nothing to do with Gardevoir. Not to mention all the ecchi and hentai associated with that Pokemon. Yarrrg...X_X] when I discovered the search limit. This was probably a week or so after the limit had been enacted. I searched and searched but found no information whatsoever on the search limit and the reasons it was put in place. Thus, this Stamp and another protest Group of mine was born:
It has affected quite a few users negatively. This is not true for everyone, but well over half of the people I'm Watching I found through the search system. Deep searches (Well beyond 3,000 results, to be honest). One big issue is that people who hunt for stock images and photo-manipulators have a lot less options to work with due to the limited search engine.
I can honestly say that if there had been better communication from the staff concerning the search limit and the once-pending deployment of DeviantArt Version 7, I would have never founded #DeviantArt-V7-Haters or #Search-Limit-Haters [Should have chosen #Search-Limit-Protest instead... :sigh:]
I certainly do not condone the abuse the staff has suffered. My goal was and still is for a civil protest and to provide information regarding changes to DeviantArt. I have been a victim of trolling in the past and I encourage the members of my protest Groups not to go trolling or flaming anyone. Some Deviations were submitted to #Search-Limit-Haters that were attacks against some of the staff. I promptly rejected those.
I really am optimistic about the future of DeviantArt. Besides, my main reason for being here really is to appreciate the artwork on display here as well as share my own work with the community. If I was a raeging moron, I don't think I would ever have amassed over 53,000 hits on my main DA page or 197 Watchers.
Hear about the latest update at DeviantArt? The latest change is to the DA Note system, used to send private messages, underwent an overhaul, but yet again, there was no Notice about it. At least this change was an improvement and not a limitation or a bug-infested, slow-running new site interface.
Honestly, I believe the staff would end up with a lot less grief from angered users if they were more forthcoming about changes to DeviantArt. I still remember the mess DA V7 caused... Better they tell us about such things then a bunch of raeging users, eh?
Well, thank you very much for your patient with me and for being understanding. I hope I have been respectful to you.

I was referring specifically to Heidi's journal at [link] where she said: "Could and should we have pre-announced the change, explaining when it was coming and why it was needed? Yes, absolutely. We miscalculated and we're sorry." Hope that helps. Thanks for being patient with me too. Sorry I can't respond to the whole post! I just got home from classes and I need a nap. xD

Yep, especially if you have a general search query. "Star Wars" "Pokemon" and other popular genres, topics or franchises just as examples.
