Description Current ship lineup for a universe I am working on. Sizes are aproximately to scale. The cruiser is about 1.5 km in length. All three are still works in progress.

If I ever end up finishing this project, there will be an epic battle between the empire and the union. I'm trying to create a style of capital ship combat that has yet to be seen in movies or games.

I'm interested to know what differentiation you are attempting to go for with capital ship engagement. I really do love "big ship" battles. The bigger the better!

What's the universe you're working on for? Are you planning in-game usage of your ships? It shouldn't be that hard to import all these ships in FreeSpace 2 SCP.

as far as what HASN"T been done yet, that's tough. The basic style of space combat movement, in many differant styles, akin to naval engagements or aerial dogfighting. The most you can do is either A, invent a new weapon type that revolutionizes warefare, or B, invent a new environment to fight in (say, fighting in a asteroid field or upper atmosphere of a planet would be differant than normal space fighting), or C, invent a group-specific style (does it favor defensive maneuvering, offensive maneuvering, ramming, etc.)

Thanks for the fav

I was actually thinking of setting the battle in low orbit around jupiter, and having ships go into and out of the atmosphere. I was also going to reveal a new technology at the beginning of the fight, which would be a pretty big part of the plot leading up to it. I don't exactly want to say what it is I have in mind just yet. I'll be making a bunch of test animations this summer, so my exact thought process will make more sense then.

I'm going to be starting 3D modeling and animation soon and I'm wondering, how long did it take you to get to this level of ability?

DrMan In reply to Lewis12 [2008-04-17 00:27:11 +0000 UTC]

Well I've been using 3d Studio for about a year now, and I had been using Truespace before that for a few years. I will be taking my first formal 3D modeling and animation class next year in college, so up to now I've just learned the apps through exploring them, trial and error, and many tutorials.

So far, I feel I'm pretty familiar with modeling, texturing, rendering, and basic animation, so I plan to learn about complex character animation in class.

I like the concept of trying to create something no one has seen...or rarely has seen (one should say....because that just make people look for when it was done before and go LOOKIE! ).

I think they look good thus far. I just like looking at them and the shadow and such...never seen this program before so I'm easily fascinated.

Thanks This was done with 3d studio, with mental ray sun and sky lights. I'm screwing around with different lighting and rendering techniques, to see what works best with differing compositions and moods (although this image doesn't have much of either since I just threw the ships in, to get an idea of what they look like relative to each other )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DrMan In reply to RQAlucard [2008-03-31 16:56:46 +0000 UTC]

I'm thinking the ships will take full advantage of 3d movement in space, as well as using the gravitational fields of planets and moons to their advantage when maneuvering. They will all also have gravitational reactors, which can give the ships a burst of momentum in any direction, so it would look like the ship is throwing it self in what ever direction it needs to move. I'm still working this out, and looking to see if something like this had been done before.

I also want to take advantage of the environment where the battle takes place. I have thought about setting it in orbit around jupiter so the ships may end up falling, and flying through its atmosphere, while fighting.

DrMan In reply to RQAlucard [2008-04-01 23:51:35 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I had a similar idea, with very high velocity missiles fired out of the broadside tubes on the imperial ships, which would leave a trail that looked somewhat like a curved beam, as they tracked their targets.

well, there, the missiles corckscrew in just about every direction, until they finally land on target
(they make a few loops, some sharp turns, things like that)

Thanks I shall see what works out best. My biggest issue now is not even the movie or the ships, but whether I'll have enough time to finish it, or get a considerable portion done. Hopefully the next year of college won't be as bad as my first foundation year.

DXBigD In reply to DrMan [2008-03-31 22:55:24 +0000 UTC]

Well that depends. College tends to be very easy at first then it only gets harder! If you were just getting used to it at first though it might seem easier for you. I'm curious what your style idea was though.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DrMan In reply to DXBigD [2008-04-01 23:50:31 +0000 UTC]

The idea I had was using newtonian physics for the huge ships, as well as small fighters/bombers (If I even include any. I'm thinking dogfighting would be obsolete at that point in this particular universe). The ships would also have gravitational reactors, so when they used that to move, it would seem as if they were throwing themselves, as well as possibly having a visual effect which seems somewhat like a ripple, as it distorts space for a second.

I also plan to have no turrets on the Imperial ships, which instead use lasers which have a full firing arc around the ship for defence. As far as offence, I am putting broadside and forward pointing projectile tubes which can fire a variety of ammunition, as well as serve as docking tubes. The primary offencive ammo type would be very fast moving missiles, with anti matter warheads, which would leave trails similar to the engine trails in Homeworld, so it may be an interesting visual as an Imperial ship suddenly sprouts glowing" arms" from its sides, looking vaguely like a squid.

As far as visual style, I want to go for something on the very realistic side, but not completely documentary style like in Battlestar Galactica. I'll have muted sound fx in space, no visible laser beams, and no firey explosions. The trick is to make it look good with these limitations, so I'll see how that turns out. I will probably do a few animation tests with the weapons, when I have the time, so it may make much more sense when I put those up.

As far as college goes, I've been told by alot of people that foundation year here is much tougher than when you get into your major. The first year I didn't have much of a choice with my schedule, plus I had to take a bunch of traditional art courses, the only one which I found useful being Drawing. I feel it was more of a waste than anything helpful. But just one more month, and summer break, so I can't wait to get out of here

looks like you've got a great idea on how you want your ship-to-ship engagements to look like, you said no fiery explosions right. well fire can exist in space for about a split second granted but it can exist, i myself would put a quick burst of fire(that would slightly look like liquid)and then have it look as though atmosphere is venting at extreme amounts depending on the size of the breach, if you would like to talk more about this then message me bro, im not trying to tell you how to do it but if you want i have some ideas you might find interesting

DrMan In reply to djomally [2008-07-22 02:22:29 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I've been contemplating these types of things for quite awhile now, and I'm starting to get a style set down. Any input is more than welcome

As far as explosions go, I recently read an article about what an explosion might look like in a vacuum. I don't remember the URL, but according to the author it would just be a very brief flash of light. Now I'm not going to go that far, as far as realism is concerned, and the author also didn't talk about the leaking of gases which you pointed out. I will definately have some form of flame effect, and huge amounts of debris. At this time frame in my universe, however, the crew aboard these ships is very small compared to other sci-fi ships, and real life ships, because of heavy automation inside the ship. I thought about this, and decided that most of the ship would probably not be pressurized, except for the command room, crew quarters, and emergency access tunnels (Or it could be compartmentalized, where sections can be filled with air, if someone needed to enter them).

djomally In reply to DrMan [2008-07-22 02:45:55 +0000 UTC]

also you might want to consider that with the decompression of certain areas of the ship, it might look as though its collapsing in on itself due to the effect the the escaping atmosphere will have, but alot of the gases that would escape would freeze almost the second it leaves the ship so you would not only have wreckage from the ship but also a good amount of frozen fuels and water , along with coolant liquids and such.and yes i believe i've read the same article, it did have a great view of what a massive explosion like that would look like

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DrMan In reply to djomally [2008-07-22 03:49:06 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, if a massive explosion isn't realistic in space, large amounts of flying debris, and escaping gas cetaintly is, and should look just as cool, if done right

It may be awhile, since its going to be part of a plot element that appears near the end of the story, which foreshadows an even larger story, which I don't want to spoil just yet.

I can always make the model though, since its not the look of the ship which is in the plot, but an ability.

All live action/with CG effects. I'm hoping to start out with a series of short episodes, and see where it goes from there. I'm going to start out small, and then add crazier and crazier stuff, as my filmmaking skills improve, and I get access to more resources.

Maybe, just maybe, one day it might become a feature film.
