Your unknown background is a panorama of New York City. You can see the Chrysler building in the mid-upper-right of the image. I have no idea who made it, however. I can't see the Empire State building, so it may be the position of the photograph.

They have a lot in common.

Both are female derivatives of a male superhero, in this case heroes both named Captain Marvel. Both their original costumes were red. They, currently, both use a lightning bolt for a symbol and have similar powers; although Ms. Marvel has energy blasts and Mary doesn't. They both gain their powers through an instant transformation.

But Mary's cooler.

Yup!

The main difference is that Carol's powers come from science and Mary's from magic. Oh yeah, and Carol has always remained the same age when she transforms, Mary sometimes gains a few years depending on when the comic was written.
