Description Nani: Did you catch fire again?
David: No just the stage.
-----

I adore Lilo and Stitch. I love pretty much everything about this little movie. It was so different, funny, sweet, and heartwarming.
And Chris Sander's style? Woo, I was kinda sad that I was taking these characters and putting them into my 'blah' style. X3

You know, even when I was little (during my age of, 'I hate everything!!') I found David attractive. Besides the fact that he's just as sweet as can be, I think it's his man necklace. X3
And Nani?Taking care of her little sister, shouldering all that responsibility thrown at her, dealing with an alien... She's pretty awesome.

When I read that Lilo and Stitch was the first Disney movie since Dumbo to have watercolor backgrounds, I knew that I wanted to whip out my watercolors and pay homage to that. <:^)
I've... never really been very good with watercolors. So, when I got to this point (to the point where I'm happy with it), I told myself to stop, while I still could. with traditional media... I have the very bad habit of overworking my drawings. I don't know what it is, but that's what happens! <:^0

So, given the fact that I've never been good with my watercolors (maybe I should read some tutorials), and also given that I haven't worked with them in... oh, five years or so, I think that this came out alright. I like it, anyway. ^__^

Oh, and this served as a good means as to winding down after a frustrating day of graphing sinx and cosx. >:^P

I think I have commented on this piece before and if so or if not, whatever, I am commenting on it yet again ebcause I adore it so much! I adore both your image and this couple-one of my top favs, hardly behind Anya and Dimitri, which is saying alot. Honestly, it's because of all the reasons you mentioned: how sweet, good-intentioned and attractive David is and how Nani shoulders all responsibility and tries her best, is spunky and knows what she wants out of life but tries to help make others happy more than herself. Lovely work, the watercolors are so soft, gentle and beautiful. I am so thankful that you created a fanart for them and I would love to ask you to paint a family portrait of Nani, David, Lilo and Stitch together and yet I've already asked you to draw too many pictures as it is hahah. Please consider it because the couples I've suggested for you to draw recieve hardly any love or recognition at all and yet I think that these characters as well as the movies they are from are some of the best animated films and movies in general with wonderful and unique characters and plots. Thanks so much, I love this piece so much!

Hahah, well, I may draw them a family portrait--who knows! I'm not one to close a door on a subject.
And thank you! I'm glad ya like this one. I worked very hard on the watercolors.

Oh my gosh, this picture is darling! Thank you so much for this image of these two, they are one of my favorite Disney couples and you did a splendid job with the watercolors, yes I think paying homage was a great idea

Did you use anything as a reference image or was that purely from your head? Also you did a awesome job on coloring it, especially the skin tones and the water

ashleyjordan In reply to DrMistyTang [2010-04-11 21:39:33 +0000 UTC]

Are you serious? Wow you are lucky that you no longer need references, but that's probably due to so much practice, right? Do you have any tips on for what helped you to be able to draw without references? Sorry if that is too broad of a question

Yeah skin is actually really fun, I like to blend it and add stuff like blushes and the eyes

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DrMistyTang In reply to ashleyjordan [2010-04-12 04:58:06 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I am. References have never really worked for me. Maybe once in a blue moon, but other than that... nope. The closest thing I would do, is look at a few pictures of what I wanted to do, stare at them for a while, then go off and try to do it myself from memory. Because if I just straight-out tried to copy it, it would look stiff and icky.

Well, besides practice, I did a lot of observing. I still do. I think that observing is the next big thing after practicing. Look at how others do things. Try to emulate them. Even if it's not in a style that is similar to yours (in fact, I encourage looking at a wide range of art styles). If you're not already looking at a wide range of styles, I would be happy to recommend some artists to check out.
Hope that helps!

Oh right, that makes sense, especially to get the idea of the pose without completely copying it. I'll worek on it

Would you mind recommending some that you respect or think are good ones to look at? That would help so much

I really love the warm, sunlit look of this painting. And for someone who never uses watercolor, you've done a nice job. Granted, I'm another "I rarely use watercolor and am not quite sure what I'm doing" person, so take my opinion with a grain of salt if you want, but I really like it.

I also really enjoy the lifelike way you draw faces, and I'm impressed at how well you've captured the body types from the movie. I really loved the characters' massive thighs and muscular bodies - it was really distinctive and suited them and their lives so well - so it's nice to see that recreated instead of just turned into some sort of generic body type.

So what I'm trying to say is that you did a very good job, and I hope you're pleased with this!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DrMistyTang In reply to selie [2010-02-27 19:19:18 +0000 UTC]

Why, thank you! Yes, I always try to keep the characters themselves, even though I'm drawing them in my style. It just wouldn't feel right if I made Nani stick-skinny, or if I made David non-muscular.
And yes, I am pleased with it! If I wasn't I would've scrapped it and started over. X3

And thank you so much for the meaningful comment!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

selie In reply to DrMistyTang [2010-02-28 03:44:36 +0000 UTC]

Often when people draw fanart, they lose what made the original characters look so distinct. I'm all for drawing a character in your own style (otherwise I'd be hopeless at fanart!) but that doesn't mean sacrificing the original design unless you're doing it for some reason... so, I really like what you did here. I think you blended your style and the original designs very well.

I looked through the rest of your gallery (or at least some of it) and your art is so charming. <3

I actually really love your traditional medium work like this. Nothing against CG, but your art works very well with non-digital media. It's very rich and organic.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DrMistyTang In reply to selie [2010-02-28 06:08:55 +0000 UTC]

Mm-hm, I totally agree. I always try to stick to the original designs as much as possible. Because, messing with the artist's intent like that... ooh, that just bothers me.

Oh, you think so? I never thought that my traditional art was any good! XD That's why I've been sticking to digital. Maybe I should work more with my traditional stuff.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

selie In reply to DrMistyTang [2010-02-28 17:17:53 +0000 UTC]

I think you should do more traditional stuff if you want to! I am biased toward traditional stuff to begin with, but I would like to see more from you. Your sketches are very lively and organic, and your marker work is fun. I think you're well suited to traditional media. But, ultimately, it's whatever you're going to have fun with.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DrMistyTang In reply to selie [2010-02-28 18:51:02 +0000 UTC]

Honestly, I prefer traditional artwork, too. I love digital work, but it's just not the same as holding the paintbrush in your hand and putting it on the canvas. <:^)
I just never thought that my traditional stuff was up to par, so I haven't played with it too much. X3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

selie In reply to DrMistyTang [2010-02-28 19:05:26 +0000 UTC]

Do it! Or, at least, I hope you do. I'm going to watch you so I can see new stuff that rolls in. I'll be looking forward to any traditional experiments you put up.

I personally prefer art media that gets on my hands. Pencil lead, ink smudges, smears of colored pencil, patches of paint - it's really, really fun to work with such tangible media, at least for me. So I completely hear you on that one. Do you ever use colored pencils?

(Also, will you forgive me for messing with your comments here? I don't mean to get too much off on a tangent away from the original picture in question!)

DrMistyTang In reply to selie [2010-02-28 19:16:06 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I am! I'm working on another watercolor right now. I may or may not finish it today. It depends on how my studying goes. X3

Mm-hm, I have worked with some colored pencils. I've done several things, but I like my collection of Prismadoodles [link] because it marks what progress I made over the course of my first week with prismacolor pencils.

No, no, I don't mind comments that go off onto different subjects! I rather like having conversations like this. It's fun (and sometimes enlightening)!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

selie In reply to DrMistyTang [2010-02-28 19:25:32 +0000 UTC]

Oh, nice! I've actually been considering experimenting with other techniques using my prismacolors, allowing some white to show through (like in the pictures you linked there) - I more or less exclusively "burnish" my pictures unless I'm specifically going for an effect, but I really like some of the stuff I've seen in the other style. Maybe I'll try that soon. Seeing your art has pushed me to think about experimenting again...

Post up your new watercolor whenever you finish it. I'll look forward to seeing it! Two of my friends are brilliant with watercolors, and they've talked me into trying another painting soon, but I really don't know much about the medium - but I LOVE seeing other people work in it, and if this particular picture is any indication, your end result is going to be lovely. Good luck. <3

DrMistyTang In reply to selie [2010-02-28 21:02:48 +0000 UTC]

Nyahaha, I'm just lazy. If the plain white of the paper will achieve a good highlight effect that I can't do better myself, I let it do it.
Experimenting makes me happy--especially when it ends well. That's why I do it so often!

Oh, I will! (Unless I totally botch it.) *sigh* I wish I had watercolor friends... I bet my technique would improve ten-fold just by watching someone else work with them. X3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

selie In reply to DrMistyTang [2010-03-01 17:00:29 +0000 UTC]

It's not just using the white as a highlight - it's a textural difference (when I use my pencils, I cover the entire paper with a solid wall of color) and it's a nice style.

I've gotten in the habit lately of experimenting more. I went through several years when I barely experimented at all, and as you might expect, I didn't improve as much as I should've. Ah, life.

My watercolor friends are fun because one is a stickler for "doing things right" (pure watercolor, apply in the right order, use proper brush strokes) and the other believes there's no right way and it's not cheating to use gouache or colored pencils. I've learned quite a bit from both of them, including that I've used my paintbrushes wrong this whole time. Oops!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DrMistyTang In reply to selie [2010-03-01 22:50:28 +0000 UTC]

Hahah, I wouldn't be surprised if my technique with my brushes is totally wrong. But, it's worked out okay so far, so I'm not complaining. X3
