Description
Colored illustration for the "A Daily Dose of Insanity" book cover.Covers are challenging but incredibly fun to do! You have to make sure to leave "inactive space" for text and titles, while still trying to make it attractive to new readers.
Update (6/3/14): The cover was looking a tad too dark and too high contrast to me, so I went back in and added color holds to lighten up the image a little.

Thanks! I'm glad it turned out the way it did. One key, I've found, to making rooms and the like look realistic is to make sure they're filled with normal stuff. Only problem is... some normal stuff is actually pretty hard to draw. I'm looking at you, drapes!

It's pretty crazy how things come together, right Sebastian? This project was a whole lot of fun. I always love it when I get the chance to do a full colored illustration. They just take me soooo long to do!

Yeah, I love high contrast (part of why most of my illustrations are Black and White). I was mainly afraid the book cover would look too dark. Adding the color holds simply lightened up the art a little, so hopefully it won't look too "muddy".

I actually went back and did color holds on the image, so I'll be updating it momentarily.

Yeah. Book covers are crazy hard. You know, though... if you're not really into the book cover designing thing, it's almost worth it to just hire a professional cover artist to do it. Nothing can help (or hinder) your book more than the cover. Just something to consider.
Thanks for the comments!

Yes I am considering it because of time constraints more than anything!
I going to come up with a few prototypes and do a vote.

Yeah. That's the biggest problem. When you're worrying about the internal content, the last thing you want to stress about is how the outside of the book will look, right?

Droakir In reply to Gneiss-chert [2014-06-02 20:19:23 +0000 UTC]
True, you are an artist. However - one thing I've learned over the years is that "not all artists are created equal". In other words, we all have our strengths and our weaknesses. Things we are really good at, and things that we can potentially do a good job on, but might take us absolutely forever to do. For example, although I like to consider myself a competent writer and penciller/inker, I take absolutely forever to color pieces. I will openly admit that I am just not very fast at it. Given the money, and if I need a final result quickly, I would likely hire a colorist.
Then again, there is always budget. If you have the time, then do it yourself and save the money. That's what I did with these recent book covers. I'm also doing that Group Pic project as an exercise both in speeding up my illustration process, as well as practicing my coloring techniques more.

Yes you are right about that!
I know I am slower than most, but not the slowest! So far time is fine, but that means everything will get delayed longer too.
Yes budget is the issue and the man is in charge. Β He says no. Β I will do my best!
Ah that is a good idea! You draw faster then I do that's for sure!

Oh, I understand that. If you want cover feedback, feel free to note me a link to your design and I'll let you know what I think. I tend to lean towards much simpler designs. I think simpler catches the eye more. But yeah. I'm happy to help you out with cover layout should you need it.

Hmm I thought so too. Β My sister was pushing towards more.
I will do that. Β I plan to have a few designs roughed out to be voted on by the community. Β That worked well for another author. Β The one everyone liked was not the one she wanted.
It looks lovely though!

That's why it's good to come up with several variations and seek the opinions of other folks. That's what I tend to do with my designs.
