how did you make the template for this, did you use a program, and what picture is this inspired of?

I believe it was one of the Marvel Masterpiece cards, or the same artist from one of those series. But I didn't use any program, I never liked how they determined colors, I did it by hand so I could control the exact colors I used.

I would like to see your source material, and can you elaborate on what you mean. Did you just loosely put down the beads based on a picture, or did you decrease the resolution of the source picture until you could get a 1 pixel 1 bead conversion?
and how long did you use on making it? how many hours and days?

I am sorry if I am nosy I am just interested in hearing how others do it.

If you do a google image search for 'dark phoenix' the image I used will pop up. I shrunk the source image down to the size I wanted the final piece to be, then used it as an underlay. I started with the blacks, then worked my way up to lighter colors in each range of colors. It helps if you lay out a color palette ahead of time, grouping like colors together from dark to light. I did it all on the computer with a similar palette that I made based on the availability of my own bead colors, then I beaded it from the hand-drawn pixel image I made using the shrunken image as the base. I didn't do any manipulation of the actual base image, I just used it as a reference for the shading and general color groups.

okay let me see if I get this.
you
A) shrunk it down to a suitable size
B) painted over the colours to fit into the colours available in beads

that seems like a good approach, but B can be rather time consuming, especially for larger works, I mean you have to do one pixal at a time right?

DrOctoroc In reply to rphb [2014-02-25 17:24:40 +0000 UTC]

Pretty much, yeah. It's very time consuming but the results are much better than any filter or automated program. Those programs take the most similar color from the bead palette and replace each pixel with that color, but most colors have a tint that doesn't match the more vivid colors, so you'll get a mix of greys and off-colors in with the brighter colors it picks up, and it wont look as good as eying the colors manually and adhering to a color range based on your own judgement. It will also look purer, as opposed to a polarized appearance which will have random pixels thrown in to shades areas that can be better represented by omitting those unwanted extras.

okay, I am not using that much time with working on the translation, I have a more wing it approch, deciding each bead as I go along, it works find in drawings but I don't know how well it would work with pictures. You properly know that I am doing that mlp poster, but I'm almost finished and yearn to try something more adult.

It took around 4 days of solid work, not including the pixelling of the image.

AMAZING!

I have actually seen this picture on google images, along with some other sites when I first started getting into perler beads and reading up on the proper procedures.

I was flabbergasted then, and I'm flabbergasted now.

How long would you say she took you to make? I'm surprised you still have any fingers left, she must have taken 20 pegboards or more to make.

How tall are each bead? Beadsprites'm interested in doing, but I wish we were not very large.

Thanks!

Thanks! This piece is the same size as a standard home movie poster, about 24" x 36". Each bead is between 1/5 and 1/6 of an inch in diameter. They do sell mini beads (Hama company) that are 1/4 the size of the beads I use, but they take a lot longer and require tweezers or very small fingers, haha.

SpriterRogy In reply to DrOctoroc [2009-12-21 19:33:53 +0000 UTC]

Oh, it's very tall... I'm looking for another form to do this art... I invented another form, but I am not sure that works. I thought of using beads for bracelets, necklaces not to, and paste them into a plastic surface with white glue, which dries it becomes transparent ... I'll try to see if it works, thanks for your help.

Thanks!(again)
