Description The villain from Mark of the Conifer, the "Lady Charr", an Acrocanthosaur.
Call me old school, but I've never understood why people put the entire genus and species of the dinosaur they've illustrated. It's not like anyone's going to confuse it. "Holy cow, that's a Brachiosaurus altithorax? I thought it was Brachiosaurus brancai. My mistake." Not only are most dinosaurs of a single genus and species, and those that are of multiple species are under heated dispute, it's like saying "Myes. I've illustrated a Panthera tigris. Chiante?" I suspect it's from that high folks get using big words, and take it from me, Dinosauria lends itself well to it. When I was little, a Stegosaurus was a Stegosaurus, and folks wouldn't get confused about what you meant. Unless they were complete idiots.

This will be moved to scraps eventually; I was just trying out a color scheme. My scanner is on the fritz and I had no tablet pressure for this one. I suddenly have a new appreciation for not only James Gurney, but for anyone who manages a passable dinosaur illustration. I thought cats were hard? I should've been punched.

She is perfect for a villain. But I have never heard of "Mark of the Conifer". Can someone tell me what it is?

Eh ... a dinosaur novel I have planned. You can see a bit more of the world if you look at my comic "The Pact."

Oh thank you. I have read "The Pact" and it looks very promising.

Aghhh, this is beautiful~~ <333 The color makes me want to leap up and hug this guy. And his arms are so cute, lawl~ He looks like he's showing off his sexy atrophied biceps. :'D Whatta pimp.

And rotfl, that's so true about the genus-species thing.. xD I hate it when people use scientific names in place of common ones. It's like.. "Bos taurus..? ...It looks like a cow to me. o_o"

you could totally say that the rough-hewn look is from the dinosaur reaching out of the past and popping into our faces...fits the subject well

I really like the light shining on the face...done really well!

That's really cool! BTW, it is kind of weird how people put the entire name of the dinosaur...IF there is only one species.

Yikes.. that's quite a thing to be put into scraps... that's still awesome material, even more so since the roughness has captured and encapsulated your natural drawing method more obviously than your highly rendered finished pieces donchaknow... and I highly commend your efforts since dinosaurs are a heck of a lot more difficult to pull off successfully too, especially if you're going for an anatomically-correct realistic finish... indeed, you're probably one of the best high-renderers in my watch list...not that that's saying much because you're so professional with your work and what not... but anyway, I love this piece.. I like raw drawings... it's a nice insight into just how you apply yourself.. ok, i'm getting metaphysical but yeah, I compliment you. Very nice indeed.

I'm a good renderer!? I'm terrible! I get incredibly impatient with a lot of work; by the time I've done cleanup and inking I'm ready to slap the paint on there. I do like entirely tablet drawn stuff every now and then, because it allows me to stay loose and I do good work when I'm loose.
My understanding of light, color, and shadow is leagues away from good.

Well I can't say I knew exactly what she /was/ from what you told me, but I knew she'd look badass. I think you got the badass part down.

pardon my language, but f*ck monkies, man, the colors are brilliantly awsome! I'd offer you advice on anatomy, but I don't know the first thing about drawing dinos. :3 And given that this is just a concept sketch, I can't think of any useful critique to offer. ...oh! But I thought of a questioni!

What color is her tongue?

Droemar In reply to HollowRaevin [2008-01-06 18:23:14 +0000 UTC]

It started out pink, but then that seemed too "nice", so I tried turquoise, then grey. It'll probably be grey.

I rather like grey. ^.^ Especially with all the other colors.

She has a brother; I might make his tongue turquoise because their markings are so similar.
