Wouldn't having the tail outside of the body be a compromise to overall structural integrity? Not to mention how the vacuum of space and radiation.etc.etc. would generally fuck up that tail.

It's a pin on tail to make you go There is also the possibility that the ship has somewhat functional gravity plates there to keep a slight atmosphere but the star radiation.. I dunno... Shielding?
