Description Hadrosaurs first entered Africa during the Late Cretaceous, with the genus Ajnabia being the oldest representative from the continent discovered so far. Descended from European relatives of Arenysaurus, these animals went on to great success in Africa. A number of basal forms are known from Paleocene and Early Eocene deposits in Morocco and Algeria, with the widespread family Arsinosauridae first appearing in the Middle Eocene of Egypt. These were Africa's dominant medium-sized herbivores, displaying rather gracile builds and being on the whole rather small by Hadrosaur standards. Indeed, the largest genera measured up to 7m long, in comparison to the 15m behemoths that dwelt in Eurasia and North America during the Paleocene and Eocene. Arsinosaurids were flexible browsers, possessing narrow slender jaws and selective diets, likely feeding on leaves, bark and low growing foliage. Turkwelodon was one of the larger Arsinosaurids, measuring 5m long and inhabited the tropical savanna forests of Late Oligocene Kenya in extensive herds. Indeed, it was the most common herbivorous dinosaur present at the Losodok site, with palaeontologists suggesting that the animal formed groupings of between 8-15 individuals. In order to facilitate species recognition, T. timius utilized a tall, narrow and rounded head crest which was almost certainly brightly coloured. A possible role in courtship displays is also likely, with flamboyant males competing for access to a hareem of females. The genus would have been preyed upon by large Abelisaurs and Sebecosuchids, seeking safety in numbers. Arsinosaurids were present from the Middle Eocene to the Middle Miocene, when increased competition from the rapidly developing Ankylotarsiiformes caused the group to decline and fade away into extinction.
