Description While this is just a rough sketch, I thought I'd go ahead and post it.
I previously posted the even rougher Velvet Dance picture, and now I actually have a background.

as long as were talking about his art and not his kooky theories or his critique style...it is!

Thanks, then! (Hey, I like his theories. Just because they fly in the face of science, well maybe because they fly in the face of science.)

...and rational...and logic...and hard physics...

i have less of a bone to pick with him than howard chaykin...he once refered to him as that "opinionated fat f@*c!"
i rreally just dont like the handling of his critiques. i flat out refuse to let him critique my work. now ive let will eisner, batton lash ,terry moore ,dave sim ,gerhard ,chaykin.nick cardy, and al williamson all give me a critique. but ive seen him do to much damage to very talented artists...(i.e. bob smith)

Really? Bob Smith is a great inker! What did Adams say to him?

Trevor-Nielson In reply to DrStrangebob [2006-11-15 04:53:57 +0000 UTC]

the story(from bob smith himself ) i s that niel told him hed never make it as an artist...but he might scrape by as an inker. bobs a hell of an artist and is notorious for fixing 'hack' work. correcting anatomy and such. but hes also a gentle soul and niels critique cut him to the quick. he gave up drawing and stuck to inking. ( hes inked some of my work for bongo btw)
niel is a bit of a bull when he doesnt need to be with young ,impressionable artists. thats fine, but i believe in the more encouraging rapport i got with eisner, etc... theres plenty of room for us all, man!

I used to love his inks on Colan. In fact next to Tom Palmer, he was one of my favorites.
Colan of course is one of my greatest influences.

he used to be the best inker on grells warlord too.

I'd either forgotten that or didn't realize he was the inker.
That'd be a demanding penciller to work for I'd bet. He adds so much crosshatching.

Yeah, I can imagine. I hated them on Kirby. In fact if it isn't Sinnot on Kirby, I can just about guarantee I won't like it!

Thibidoux had a good read on the K-man but Sinnot added an earthiness that didn't just replicate his vision, it enhanced it.

Great job on the poses! I love bendy poses that are just physically impossible for about 95% of us. Did you say you got some "that looks painful" comments about that first little pose on the left? I actually think it looks very graceful. I went to see Swan Lake when it came to Portland and that pose looks distinctly familiar. So yeah....painful if say....I tried it, but I saw some six-foot Russian ballerinas do it with ease!

This looks like it'll be a really fun page

Great figure work, emphasis, and intertwining shapes leading the eye across this page. Of course, I suppose it helps when you have a great figure to work with

Nice work as always, Dr.!

eustressor In reply to DrStrangebob [2006-10-05 23:04:01 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I was sure you didn't use a model for this... but it's clear with the consistent quality of your figure work when depicting Velvet that you have a pretty good mental model of the be-towered sorceress

So this is what you've been leading us up to! Sweet! Can you get that kind of movement out of Tiny Dancer? She seems too active for such a song, but then I suppose you can smile and sweat just as well moving slow.

Excellent page layout, wonderful work of Velvet, even if it's the same as the prior pic, and everything just draws the eye and works well together. (Is that a bust of Elo?) Superb. Really. Mesmerized again.

DrStrangebob In reply to katarthis [2006-09-29 03:10:37 +0000 UTC]

I thought maybe the bust was E.A. Poe (or Pallas! lol).
Then again, maybe it is Elo. It's the kind of thing he'd give her for Christmas, if he celebrated it, that is!

Damn, I want to share the first five pages so badly but they're only in the roughing out stages. I probably will letter them in the pencil stage and post them prior to inking them.
