Description
Read the next comic stripWhenever I'm uncertain about someones gender I do what I do with most situations I don't know how to handle. I cause a quick distraction and run towards the nearest forest line and live in the woods for a a couple of days to a week.
I'm a kinda awkward person.
This comic might cause you some Déjà vu.
Something else that might have you running is the Twogag Facebook Page.
But it'll getcha.

Wayne's a lot smarter than I would've expected, given his past I'd have thought he'd charge in Like Custer on Wounded Knee. But no, Wayne's surprisingly smarter then that. He's sending a scout.

GOD: "Congrats, you, BettyPimm has won. You reward is the kingdom of heaven."
BETTY: "Wow thanks, I don't understand tho-"
GOD: "No worries, you were quite close though."
BETTY: "What? Close?"
GOD: "Yeah. fat was gonna get you, falling anvil, you almost ran out of time."
BETTY: "But...? Don't you go to heaven AFTER you die?"
GOD: "Common misconception, no. WHen you die, you die, hence the term 'death', to go to heaven you must win the game of life, which you just did."
BETTY: "By replying in a thread on dA?"
GOD: "Yes, you got how life works and stuff, you just made sense, first time anyone did in YEARS. So, enjoy your stay!"
BETTY: "Wait wha-"

It's more that it's trying to point out that some people are both feminine and masculine, to a point where it's difficult to tell what gender they actually are. A man that has feminine features can be mistaken for a woman, and that has actually happened to me once when I shaved my beard (I have long hair and fairly soft facial features, so without the facial hair, I can physically pass for female at certain distances). And then there are women who look just masculine enough that with certain clothes, you might think they're male until you talk to them, and even then, some women have a voice that could pass for a softer male voice. This comic isn't being insensitive, it's pointing out just what I said, that 'Alex' could be a masculine woman or a feminine man, and Wayne is too dumb to find out, but smart enough not to ask.
And on that point, asking someone what their gender is can go one of two ways. The first, they laugh it off because it's happened on more than one occasion and they tell you their gender and not to worry. The second, they're the type of person that gets offended easily by this because it either hasn't happened before or has happened so much that they're tired of it, and in both cases there, they get mad and start yelling that it should be obvious that they're the gender they are. People aren't made of glass, but they're also not made of Kevlar. What might be amusing to one person is offensive to someone else, and I should know, I'm overweight and don't give a rat's tail if someone makes a dozen fat jokes at my expense. I'll even throw in a few that they didn't use just to see if they'll understand that I don't mind being called El Gordo or The Fat Man. Those are actual ways to get my attention in the form of me turning my head and going 'Yo.' But there are other people that would start yelling that the person in question is being insensitive and hurtful, even if they're just trying to get a laugh.
I'll agree that people shouldn't be jerks, but I'll argue that there's no point getting mad over nothing. Bring attention to it if you find it offensive, but make a proper argument against it and appeal to the better nature of the person that made the comment or the picture. Too many people these days get mad over small and inconsequential things like a picture making a joke about something, acting like it's more than it is, reading far too much into something. Sometimes a joke is just a joke and it's not intended to be mean or hurtful. If you're really bothered by something, tell the artist in a different message, or you get people mad at you for whatever reasons. That way you're heard, but you don't start pointless and unnecessary arguments. And on that note, don't take this as an attack, I'm just bringing up these points.

It doesn't, but is it really that long of a comment that I wrote? I was just pointing out that the comic itself isn't saying anything bad, it's saying that the character Alex is androgynous, a person that looks like they could be either male or female, which has nothing to do with transgendered individuals. Another point made was that people seem to be either too easily offended these days, or they understand that sometimes a joke isn't meant to cause offense. And last, I suggested that if you truly feel offended, then you'd do better to directly send a note to Drunken-Novice so you don't cause other people to get mad at you and start needless arguments.

I've looked this comic over a couple dozen times by now and I fail to see how this comic could be considered insensitive/offensive to anyone.
For starters, as far as I know, the gender (or any information besides the name) of this Alex person has ever been revealed (no pun intended) so you can't even say that it's directed towards transgenders.
The joke here is that some look and dress very androgyneously, some on purpose, some not. I know for sure that I've come across more than a few people in my days that have had a sexually ambigous appearance about them.
I, for one, do not consider "So what are you supposed to be?" as a good conversation starter.
All this does is takes the Schrödingers Cat thought experiment and puts it into a scene of social comedy.
This has been the long version of me to tell you to lighten up.

They're sorta doing that by asking for confirmation of gender from their respective cousin to try and avoid offending them in the first place, I do agree that it can be insensitive to just assume, though.

A question I'm sure nobody gets offended by . But it's still an androgynous issue, not a transgender issue.
(Come to think of it, I'm thinking that comment also assumes that transgender people aren't able to fully appear their new gender, so I'll pile it into the "your comment in insensitive to androgynous AND transgender" pile! )

Im... struggling to find out how that is relevant, unless you're talking about yourself, and you choosing to ignore that just because someone's gender is not obvious doesn't mean their a trans?
I'm a fairly feminine looking male. I've been mistaken for a girl since I was five at least, so many times I can't even imagine (including a few times while I had a fairly long goatee... I'm still pretty confused about those...). Being insulted by someone confusing your gender is such a silly thing (Personally I find their resulting embarrassment pretty amusing, generally). They're going to be right 99% of the time when they guess based on appearance. Being the anomaly isn't something to be ashamed of, but finding that people dont anticipate an anomaly an insult is such a silly, selfish thing. The world doesnt revolve around any one particular person, and while nobody should be ashamed to be who they are, when you look like a duck, walk like a duck, and quack like a duck, it isn't someone else's fault when they think you're a duck!
Although, seeing guys trying to pick up women at the bars by first questioning their gender would be pretty damned amusing...

Well still doesnt strengthen your argument either way, but it is silly to be offended. Using myself as an example again, when someone mistakes me for a woman they haven't verbally attacked me, they haven't threatened me, they havent done any harm to me in the slightest. The only possible harm they could of done to me is if I have some pride in being manly when I don't actually come off as manly, so that pride's missplaced in the first place. But I guess if you value one sex over the other that pride would be there. So, you know, if you're mildly sexist i guess?
Equality, bro, let those insecurities go!

zeratanus In reply to anunnaki888 [2013-11-14 15:43:55 +0000 UTC]
Indeed they are. But to find being called the opposite gender an insult is to have the mindset that the other gender is inferior in some manner or it wouldn't be insulting. Therefore, sexism. Different issues, but not mutually exclusive. I completely understand the mentally being and wanting to physically match another gender. That is transgender. Holding one gender as inferior to the other though is sexism: devaluation based on a person's sex.
Wow this has been quite a conversation to stem from a comic completely unrelated to transgender rights. heh.

some people don't like when they're expected to be someone they're not. Why is that so hard for you normies to understand?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
zeratanus In reply to anunnaki888 [2013-11-14 21:47:34 +0000 UTC]
Because "normies" never have expectations on them to be someone they're not. Don't divert to insults. Come up with reasoning to back up your arguement.
(which, while I'm not trans, I'd hardly consider myself to be a "normie", but hey, normies are fine too. You're just making an assumption based on a passing interaction, just like the folks who mistake me for a girl, and like that, no offense taken for not asking me for my "normie" status first. But I do have to point out the irony here )
Look, you've clearly got some hate issues and the dA comment system isn't the place to get help for those, and you haven't actually made any counter arguments that go with any of the points I've brought up, so yeah, I'mma let this convo go. Just remember, the world needs more love and understanding, not bitterness and divisive thinking, both from "normies" and everyone else. Peace~
