Reality has a terrible habit of destroying hero worship. I don't blame Tom for his disillusionment, however I do fault him for how he handled it.

So that's the first time he ever experienced pain as well? I'd say he took it pretty well. More shock than anything--his brain probably didn't know what the hell was going on, just that it was "bad."
