Description Different classes for the second playable race I designed for an MMO (previous designs here: [link] [link] [link] ). The red indicates the carapace, second set of piercing arms, and wings when extended. Details on how that works to come!

BTW, I gotta credit , I referenced his mantis photos extensively when designing these.

Welp, if you click on the links in the description, you can see I started with something completely different, rather more reptilian/mammalian. But once I hit upon the "bug" idea, I devoured as many reference pictures as I could, and then just when wild pumping out various and sundry body plans. My art director picked a few that he liked, and I synthesized them together to create a basic template for the Insectoids (it was the Everguard, specifically). Once I had the body, I also scribbled a ton of different heads to choose from, and again the art director picked his favorites. From there, I just thought about the individual purposes of the different classes, and how to convey something about that through their appearance. I started with silhouettes, then, looking again at many reference photos, turned them into something anatomically viable (in theory, at least). The step that hasn't been shown yet for the insectoids, but has been for the reptilians [link] is the turnaround, where I get the exact proportions down so a 3D modeller and animator can make the final beast that would appear in-game. Unfortunately, I only got around to this step for the Everguard, but anyway, you can see it soon.

wow thats realy intresting man! makes me wana try my and at creature desighn, the thing i love about doing insects is the vast amount of refrance that we have at our fingers, and also with insects you can mix and match as much as you want!!

Exactly! There's such an enormous variety, and the depths of their bizarreness have yet to be plumbed for mainstream creature art. I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Well, I'm loathe to convey TOO much detail, since the different classes were the art directors' ideas, not mine. Also, it's been a while since I drew these, and I don't have the original file that described their purposes, but here goes:

Overbearer is the heavy tank
Everguard is standard issue melee warrior
Spiritwaker is, like, a necromancer or something
Revenant is an assassin
Deathfeeder got poison power
Spiritsleeper got mind control power

The Spirit guys and Deathfeeder, by the way, were designed with extensive reference to 's stunning photos of various mantids. Come to think of it, I should mention that in the description.

I think by then, the project had already lost funding (this was summer of '09, mind), so the several other artists who were designing other races dropped out. I only stayed because I was using the internship for class credit. So yeah, just me and the art director at that point.

Not for a couple years, now. Even if it hadn't lost funding, I would have had to stop when college started up again. The plan was only ever for a one-summer internship. Still, I do wish it had come to fruition. A lot of the other artists' concepts were freakin' awesome. There were bird people, rat people, robot people... it ruled.
