Description Couple years ago, I interned for a game production company, doing concept art for an MMO they were developing. The game ended up on hiatus, but I had an amazing learning experience, and got some solid creature art out of my involvement.

This is the first series of sketches I did for a playable reptilian race. Just trying to get a general body plan at this point, and few refinements. Subsequent steps in the design process forthcoming!

This reminds me of the Lizard folk from D&d 3.5

Just love how these fellas scream "reptile" and you really get the vibe that they've descended from reptiles, instead of being scaly humans with a lizzard head. I can imagine them moving in a reptile-like way and in general having a very reptile-like spirit to them. Very unique and awesome. Kinda like standing in front of a big pet iguana, but a an iguana who is a) not a pet, b) stands on two legs, c) is like, very big, d) has sapient intelligence.

As said in the description, this stuff is really solid. Sapient, bipedal reptilians. Loving the realism-based fantasy here. It works.

Beautiful work. Much better than a lot of the reptilian humanoid art that's out there. You actually took the time to learn what scales look like, how they are arranged on the body, and how to draw them. I especially like the crocodilian type being with the ankylosaur-like tail down at the bottom. I love the way you did the wide ventral scales on its chest and abdomen. It looks a little like a chimera, with lizard type feet, like each major body part is borrowed from a different reptile species. Yet it still works as a coherent creature.

Thanks so much! Your "chimera" analysis was completely correct. This guy is a veritable Frankenstein's monster of different reptile bits stitched together.

Thank you! I'm insane for details, so I had a blast perusing various reptile photos and thinking, "Oh, I like those scales there... and those spines there!"

Top left is probably my favorite--it strikes me as a near-seamless anthropmorphization of a marine iguana, which sends my imagination in all kinds of exciting conceptual directions! Right is cool too, it's nice to see a sapient theropodian that DOESN'T look like a Velociraptor. Love the way you're handling the hands--those spiky gator-like serrations come off as secondary fingers, or natural mail gloves!

The scales are bodacious. I especially like the treatment of the tail in the full body figure on the lower left. Gorgeous concept work all around.

Oh, I did get ahold of God's Demon. Saragatanas is made of WIN. Absolutely amazing stuff overall, though it did help to have Inferno and Brushfire handy to keep track of some of the demons. Now he needs to write a sequel. He left open so many options, and there were several of the paintings which didn't make it into the story. Lots of room to wonder and wander.

Isn't it awesome? I hear it's going to be a trilogy.

One of the best books I've read recently, yes indeed. And a trilogy! ...But it's been soooo long! Must have more... The man is a WORLDBUILDER and we must have MOOOAR! Another book of paintings wouldn't go amiss, either, while I'm making wishes.

Word is he's helping to bring us The Hobbit and Mountains of Madness currently, so it might be a while before he does a new book. Still, Barlowe concepts on the big screen are something to look forward to!

Good to hear! I just about had a fan-girl seizure when I recognized a lot of his concept and design work in Hellboy 2. To see him tackle Mountains of Madness... Ohhh, bliss. That's one of my favorite Lovecraft stories.

You do quality work. I don't know your career aspirations, but you should do quite well. I'm not saying it'll be easy, but I can see where you could go far.

Really nice stuff - I particularly like the body shape of the reptile on the right.

DSil In reply to CoolAppleCider [2011-02-21 21:12:02 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! That's my personal favorite too, I based the body plan more closely on the lizard references I was looking at. But the art director wanted something a bit more muscular and humanoid, so I developed the one at bottom left.

Ah yeah, you can really see that development from the more tribal creature to the human version.
