Description 4'x2', Acrylics

I'd rather not delve too much into the subject matter. Suffice to say biology enthusiasts might recognize some internal anatomy in this mess. This was the first installment in my Senior Thesis, called "Corpus Mutatis" (changing body).

The second installment is here: [link]

While I didn't draw from them directly for this piece, I must acknowledge the influence of Wayne Barlowe, Zdzislaw Beksinski, Max Ernst, H.R. Giger, and DevART's own .

Apparently, I already 'watch' Bernardumaine. Credible alien autopsy, or even just plain butchery does require something of the imagination an and Ernst or Geiger coupled with the morbidity of Francis Bacon. Not having your skillI lean heavily on the inspiration provided by Max Ernst, my favourite surrealist. If you don't mind, I'd like to show you my own forays into 'alien anatomy' aegiandyad.deviantart.com/gall… . This is a sample that escaped the net of the 'alien anatomy' search term .

The more I look into this image the more my imagination sees. It's interesting, as while I see textures that remind me of intestines, I can also see vast landscapes. Awesome work!

This piece really comes off more as an oil piece because of how transparent it looks, the layering looks very good though. This piece is really great to just stare at for 6 hours, good stuff!

Thanks! Yeah, I've had a lot of people ask me if it was oil when seeing it in real life. I guess I use acrylics like oils? I should just suck it up and learn oils already.

Munch? No kidding? I'll admit I'm not that familiar with his works beyond The Scream, but I had no idea he strayed into organic surrealism.

WOW. BIG painting of viscera... I can see the influence of all of your different inspirations in the colors, textures, and composition. I do recognize a few things... But mostly I'm just enjoying the way all the squishy bits make such an interesting composition. I also really like the odd touches of color here and there - pinkish and purple and gold... Very pleasing. Before I even read your description, the first thing that popped into my mind was "DSil has been reading Barlowe's Inferno..."

DSil In reply to rachaelm5 [2011-02-07 06:05:57 +0000 UTC]

Haha, yep. God I love that series. Have you read his novel, "God's Demon?" Great stuff, a lot of incredible ideas he hasn't even illustrated yet. If only it could get a big screen adaptation.

Thanks very much for the comment! Different colors and textures is definitely what attracted me to the subject material. I was trying to achieve a generalized aesthetic of biology, without being too tied to any one specific organism. Though admittedly, most of the bits in this pic are drawn from human innards, or at least vertebrates.
