Yeah, every few years there's always a new generation of My Little Pony. What's different about this generation is that the cartoon is a bit more neutral in humor and content, rather than being 100% frilly and girly. And that's attracted folks WAY outside of the target demographic.

Its a legit cartoon that doesn't throw around "Girl Power!" every second it gets, and I find that pretty respectable.

DA Seniority? Like a higher membership ranking? I thought that was only achievable through helping the community, not popularity. Though I'd feel she was deserving of it, either way.

Who the heck remembers this show? I remember when i was a kid they where in McDonald happy meal toys back when that meant something and I thought McDonald food was .. food. I barley remember the Saturday morning cartoon. Its was before my time and not my interest anyway. I think it was on before sonic the sonic satam or ninja turtles ....or was that smurfs . I do remember my sister having one of them when we were kid. I had a yoshie toy from the super Mario super show.

There's not much to the joke other than that many of the time Pinkie talks, she jumps from one subject to a completely different one in a matter of seconds. Or at least, that's how I see it. :Y

DT-Fox In reply to NS-Games [2011-05-08 03:55:53 +0000 UTC]

I wont lie... I love it. :I Its not gonna get me to go out and buy the toys, but I enjoy it as a legit cartoon show. It sorta has that 90's Saturday Morning Cartoon feel, if you know what I mean.

But I've been keen on the show itself since I drew that one Brony art. I think what really kept me from fully getting on board was fear of folks saying "oh, you're only joining in because its popular."

You know, it's not too bad of a show I'll admit. But yeah, not really something that's gonna turn me into a long-term fan here. Lauren Faust *fyre-flye really has a good idea of what she's doing with this series.

Yeah, there aren't too many shows/franchises that can entice both sides of the gender population, much less outside the age demographic. Its even more incredible that one of the franchises to succeed is one that's ALWAYS been aimed towards little girls.

But hey, when you're a pro like Ms. Faust, anything's apparently possible!

NS-Games In reply to DT-Fox [2011-05-08 04:09:47 +0000 UTC]

From what I understand, her goal was to create a series in which both parents and children can enjoy. Something that's a far stretch from what's been seen in more recent My Little Pony cartoons. In which case it would explain why it has such a strong male audience.

DT-Fox In reply to NS-Games [2011-05-08 04:19:59 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, if you're talking about all the slapstick and cartoon violence, it is definitely more than you'd expect in a family show by today's standards. And I did notice maybe a reference or two that would mostly be understood by adults only (Huffy the Magic Dragon, LOL). And it actually helped by including some male characters in the cast for once.

But regardless of whose tuning in for the show, Hasbro/The HUB would be crazy to stop a series that racked up so much popularity and ended its first season on such a high note.

My favorite one was a character by the name "Hoity Toity." I almost had a tear in my eye from laughter.

No man, you know for sure it's gonna at least get two more seasons. After that is unclear since all children's shows these days are only designed to last that long.

DT-Fox In reply to NS-Games [2011-05-08 04:35:08 +0000 UTC]

Its also funny that even the more innocent jokes and situations are thrown out of interpretation, but that's probably a case of most of the older viewers' dirty minds.

Oh yeah, I remember you saying that most kids shows these days are sorta cut short on purpose. I guess we really wont know until its time, but a series like that plus being one of Hasbro's top franchises (I think), it'd seem so weird to stop just because the target demographic is growing up...

NS-Games In reply to DT-Fox [2011-05-08 04:38:34 +0000 UTC]

In the case that Lauren Faust does these joke. I mean it's kinda like a kid watching The Simpsons. They're just not gonna get all the jokes cause they're not old enough yet. Even if the jokes are somewhat inappropriate.

it'd seem so weird to stop just because the target demographic is growing up...
You'd think that, but that's what goes through the minds of the people that run these networks. And as a cartoonist you have to be willing to accept that if it ever comes your way. I'm sure Joe Murray probably talks about this in that book of his.

DT-Fox In reply to NS-Games [2011-05-08 04:48:52 +0000 UTC]

I know to be prepared for cancellation. You know its the beginning of the end when a show is pushed from its original time-slot to a less appealing one. Then to another night/day. Then slowly stop mentioning new episodes. Then pushed to the "graveyard shift". Its such an ingenious way to have folks forget about a show! D:

There were a few examples of how shows get cancelled, but I don't think Mr. Murray mentioned anything about most shows being cancelled because of the demographic growing up. He did say some stuff relating to "prepare for failure" and "just in case", but most of the book was about doing the right things to not get cancelled so early in development.

NS-Games In reply to DT-Fox [2011-05-08 04:56:38 +0000 UTC]

You know what's funny though is that a lot of these shows that end up getting cancelled like that, only seem to lose their popularity as a result of them pushing the time slots around. I mean Nickelodeon has had numerous chances to capitalize on new material, material that really had a good shot with the kids, and it just seems like they're not willing to take the risk anymore. Their philosophy seems to be to spit out as many new shows as they can and see which ones hold enough of an audience to even consider continuing it. Actually both Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network are guilty of this practice.

Joe Murray I don't think has had too many problems with his shows getting cancelled prematurely in his career. Both of his series did see a huge success during their runs even if in the end they were cancelled. But I know he knows all too well about the network getting too involved with his work. I've seen interviews with him where he talks about certain episodes of Rocko's Modern Life being pulled off the air because of questionable content.

DT-Fox In reply to NS-Games [2011-05-08 05:05:55 +0000 UTC]

I can understand most of CN's low ratings due to next to no fanfare for whatever show they bring in. They gave Adventure Time fanfare for 4 months straight, but Robotomy was just "slipped" into the line-up. Guess which one is still running?

I didn't think Nick dished out enough new shows to practice this anymore, but as a subsidiary of Viacom, its totally understandable. The only two channels I know who REALLY love to pull the plug after only 2 airings are Fox and Comedy Central. Actually CC is one of the BIGGEST offenders of this practice I've ever seen! I can count on one hand how many shows they canceled in just a few years.

And yeah, Joe also mentioned those situations in the books. Even how they even wanted to change Rocko's fur color just to land a toy deal (that fell through AFTER the change).

NS-Games In reply to DT-Fox [2011-05-08 05:25:31 +0000 UTC]

I didn't even know there was a show called "Robotomy" on Cartoon Network until you just said that. Shows how little they promoted it.

Take a look at some of the shows that end up as original series on their sister channel "NickToons." I gotta tell you though, ever since Viacom split from CBS (after the 2005 merger) their channels have just really gone down the tubes. Comedy Central, these guys have really lost touch on what it means to be a comedy channel.

Ah right, I remember you saying something about his fur color being changed for that toy deal. But you know, things like this happen, and in some cases it could end up being for the better.

DT-Fox In reply to NS-Games [2011-05-08 12:09:19 +0000 UTC]

I never knew CBS and Viacom actually split up, but that would explain why there's a lack of quality in a lot of their new shows. Oddly enough, CBS seems to still have quality shows, so... maybe the split was a mistake?

And yeah, maybe some changes were for the better. At the same, the current preference for a Beige Rocko over a yellow one is simply because its what we're used to. I'm pretty sure if we originally saw him as yellow, that'd be all we knew and what we'd be alright with.

NS-Games In reply to DT-Fox [2011-05-08 15:31:33 +0000 UTC]

Viacom was originally founded by CBS as a syndication company for their shows. They were forced to split from CBS back in the 1970s due to the FCC's syndex laws. In 2005 they merge back into CBS creating what's now known as "CBS Corporation." They then split from CBS later that year creating the current Viacom Inc. Ever since their reorganization in 2005 they're quality of work has really slipped down the drain.

You know, that's a question we'll never have an answer to.
