Never heard of Blender or Cycles for 3D art before.  How do they work?

Blender is exactly like 3DS Max, Maya, Cinema 4D etc. except it is open source. And Cycles is the build-in Pathtracing Renderengine
Blender has the biggest community and contains almost every CG aspect like modeling, rendering, tracking, composing and also a build-in game engine

I just downloaded it and can't wait to play with it.

But... But... I use Windows Phone 8? Lol
Nice work, dude. The glow, textures and reflections are really satisfying.

does WP even have wallpapers?

Not sure, actually.
I'm a die-hard Android user, and WP generally lacks choices and customization IMO. It was more to make fun of WP8 and praise DTM-51 at the same time.
Although an Ubuntu version of this rendered in the 16:9 ratio rather than 9:16 would be great! Or perhaps just a simple dot to make it "universal".

I'm not a wp user, I like open source and if I get a smartphone it will be definitely android or Ubuntu phones if I find anyone here
The reason I asked is that I seen some of my friends use it and it doesn't even have a backgroundk
BTW I have one or two Ubuntu wallpapers in my gallery and few of if you're interrested

I agree with you 100% on Open-Source. Microsoft are slowly becoming less and less powerful, due to Linux. At some point they have to give in on bringing back the W7 styled OS's.
And I grabbed your wallpapers too of course

yeah, i don't like how microsoft's "evolution" and its new style, as well as the lack of customizability and performance issues (and RAM greed, i mean why the hell do it need 1 GB of ram just to boot?) and that's why i'm using linux, blender seems to render faster in ubuntu gnome by 10-20% and i have more control over the system and i can even break it without getting blocked by the system
and thanks for the favs

Ikr!? Personally the only "good" experience I have the newer versions of Windows, are that they run fairly well my laptop. Even though it uses like 1,5GB (I have a total of 4GB) of RAM on idle, it's quite fast. And don't even get me started on how useless the Metro UI is! Among the bloatware/shovelware hard-coded into it.
I would switch to Ubuntu or Debian in a heartbeat, if more devs started to care porting software. But sadly I'm to dependent on stuff like MS Office for school, Adobe Software, Some Autodesk stuff, etc.

And no problem!

you can use MS office in ubuntu over the cloud, i've seen an article about it,but sadly adobe doesn't want to port to linux, and autodesk can't rewrite 3ds max, it's too late (they used .net), but at least autodesk is trying and made maya available
that was the reason i stayed with windows, but one day i forced myself to use blender instead of 3ds max and since then i rerely need to use it, and now i don't even have windows installed in my laptop

I guess I'll have to see about getting that Media Center up and running with either Mythbuntu or Ubuntu GNOME.
As for Autodesk, I really don't care that much about Max. If I use Autodesk software it's either Maya or Mudbox. However I might have to start using AutoCAD due to me starting a Technical Designer education next year. In fact I've never seen any reason why Maya and Max shouldn't be fused together. But my knowledge of what you can do in Maya compared to Max is very limited, so I don't have any justification for that opinion whatsoever.

If the Linux community keeps growing at this rate and gain more and more support from big companies, Adobe might now have a choice whether to port to Linux or not. I know for a fact that the only thing keeping Youtube-Techies on Windows, is that they need Adobe to produce content. Linux compatibility is also getting more common, and if people keep working on getting WINE better and better, Linux would be the ultimate OS. However, Adobe can keep Flash Player and ActionScript... That stuff can just go die in a hole. :3

i think maya is more oriented to animation and simulations and other similar things, while 3ds max is better at modeling (that's what people say, the workflow with it seems slower than blender)
i'll support linux till the end, and i'll avoid all these companies who don't like FOSS, i use none of the adobe nor autodesk and i don't think i will ever have to do it

The workflow in both Maya and Max seem incredibly slow compared to Blender, but I guess I can see what people mean by that.
I'll continue to support Linux and every attempt a Developer makes to provide free and Open-Source alternatives to the Big, Expensive, and Mainstream applications. Sadly I have no choice to not use Autodesk, since my Education depends on it. But Adobe can go screw themselves until they port it to Linux. (If they ever do, that is). Besides, Linux seems A LOT more stable than Windows IMO. And the Interface is nice and can be adapted to a Power-user or casual.

Do you use Nvidia cards BTW? I think I remember that getting the drivers for that are really annoying and complicating. If so, I'm curious as to if you've had the same experience.

AbdouBouam In reply to Zonuz [2015-01-21 17:19:32 +0000 UTC]

no, i have an intel hd4600 , it's relatively a new card and it was a little bit difficult too to get the drivers, i couldn't see anything in the viewport of blender, and when i installed an unstable kernel release blender crashes whenever i select an object, but when i set it up correctly it works now and i can even use VBO to work with more than 3 million vertices without slowing it too much, but the driver still doesn't support fully the gpu ( i got openGL 3.0, while the documentation says it can support up to openGL 4.5), and that's why i'm thinking of using archlinux instead of ubuntu, it's more "cutting edge" and it has the latest packages of everything
at least intel has made the drivers open source
as for nvidia, i think there's an open-source driver called "nouveau" which is simple to install in ubuntu, but i'm not sure since i never had nvidia cars

Zonuz In reply to AbdouBouam [2015-01-23 16:14:06 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, Nvidia aren't to happy about the concepts of open-source (hence why they have so many locked-down utilities for Devs to use so they can get a performance increase). That kinda sucks, but Linux is spreading so they will in no doubt have to support it 100% after a couple of years.

AbdouBouam In reply to Zonuz [2015-01-23 18:21:27 +0000 UTC]

indeed, if it continues growing at this rate nvidia won't have choice but opening their sources or at least providing fully compatible drivers
