Wow this is stunning and very informative. I had never thought to do a value layer and then just create anoter soft overlay layer above and fill with color, smart! But I do wonder, how did you make the scale on Toothless? You said you painted them, or are they a textured brush? ANd I never overly understood how those brushes work...typically they are created to go a certain direction and for patterns but I still haven't figured out how to incorporate them. I guess it's time for some experiments then Thanks and I sure hope you'll consider creating more tutorials in the future, such as one on how you create lineart and for a indepth explanation to how you shade, yet if not, thank you so very much for even creating the ones you've made! Keep up the amazing work

What do you usually set your dpi to? I can never figure out the right amount.

By the way, I love the final product.

Duiker In reply to AvFreak [2010-06-28 02:28:52 +0000 UTC]

The bigger the better! Haha

But generally, I draw at whatever size will shrink to 25% of the original size at the end

AvFreak In reply to Duiker [2010-06-28 03:12:40 +0000 UTC]

Also I just had a few more questions pop up (sorry).

What exactly is a "values layer?" And can you explain to me how you do your coloring?

Thanks!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Duiker In reply to AvFreak [2010-06-28 03:35:55 +0000 UTC]

Value artistically generally means the scope of how light or dark something is. So, in this picture, I would paint the light and dark 'values' first, and then add color overtop

AvFreak In reply to Duiker [2010-06-28 16:06:46 +0000 UTC]

So on one layer you will fill in for lighting, then put in the colors on a layer above with a layer mask?

Brilliant work! Simply stunning! Though, I am curious, did you paint all Toothless scales individually or did you use/make a brush?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Duiker In reply to Hitsurou [2010-06-07 21:09:19 +0000 UTC]

a couple brushes. I refined them later for my wallpaper pic I posted
