Did you know that the aril (the red fleshy part of the seed) is the only edible part of the yew?

AWWWW!!! Did you know that the red fruit around the seed is the only part of the yew plant that's not deadly poisonous? I tasted one some time ago because I was curious. The texture is appalling (being closer to egg white than anything)but it tasted faintly sweet and watery. I did spit it out, just to be safe If you want to try it, too, be sure not to eat the seed!!

Dunadan-from-Bag-End In reply to heidinanookie [2010-03-09 19:14:38 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that's how I found it anyway - I was picking up "fruits" ( actually this is not a fruit in scientific sense ) to eat them later on, when I found the snail. I love yew seed, you can eat it a lot, don't be afraid. Just do not seed inside - that's poisonous as well

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

heidinanookie In reply to Dunadan-from-Bag-End [2010-03-09 20:34:00 +0000 UTC]

From what I know the whole "red berry" is a drupe, the actual seed being the stone inside (which is poisonous. I know. Along with everything else except the egg white part. ) - and a drupe is a form of fruit.
What do you use them for? Are you a vegetarian or do you just like wild fruits? (My mother is all for wild plants, too. She keeps making "pop-corn" out of grass seeds and stuff like that.)

Dunadan-from-Bag-End In reply to heidinanookie [2010-03-09 21:00:41 +0000 UTC]

Wikipedia: "In biology (botany), on the other hand, a "fruit" is a part of a flowering plant" - as said before, in scientific term it is not a fruit as yew is not flowering plant, but: "In broad terms, a fruit is a structure of a plant that contains its seeds." - it is fruit in common way I study forestry so I'm twisetd a little bit, sorry

Anyway, if it comes to eating. It's just tasty, I like it so why not eating? and yes, I like natural food, growing in the forest, wild ones, they are the best As said before - I study forestry so... you know And popcorn out of grass seeds?... woah! I need some more details on this!

Well, first of you have to know that I'm not a native speaker. My mother language is actually German and it's a bit difficult to talk "science" that way I study Science of Nutrition and we learn botanical stuff, too. A lot of it. Now that you mention it I remember there was a fair bit about angiosperms and gymnosperms in my courses but since we humans normally eat angiosperms (well, there are obviously exceptions. Like juniper berries. Or yew fruits.) I'm a bit fixated on that.
Forestry sounds interesting. What exactly do you do? Plan to plant new woods? Or keep the old ones alive?
I don't know what kinds of seeds my mother uses. She collected them in the vineyards behind the house but she told me that you can "pop" virtually anything. Any grass seed, that is. It's an art to get the right heat and the right amount of oil in the pan, though.

Mind if I friend you? I like talking with you

Dunadan-from-Bag-End In reply to heidinanookie [2010-03-09 22:55:06 +0000 UTC]

No problem, friend me

I'm not native speaker either ( Poland ) and I know what you mean

If it comes to frestry... in general forestry i a science of keeping the forest alive. Look that i said forest, not trees. If you want an ecosystem to be alive, it's elements need to die, thus we learn how to cut ( "kill" ) trees and how to plant new ( "rebirth" ). Everything so that it was continuous process... because human civilisation cannot survive without wood, we constantly need it, a lot.

It's sooo cool how English connects people!
Your job is certainly very important! Especially nowadays when noone understands nature any more

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Dunadan-from-Bag-End In reply to heidinanookie [2010-03-10 20:51:41 +0000 UTC]

Hm... people never understood nature in fact, the point is to keep trying...

Anyway, I won't be forester rather, in Poland it's difficult to get a job as a forester and you earn VERY little money for this job ( 230e/month ). I go a little deep into GIS, remote sensing etc.
