« On n’est qu’à mi-chemin d’après mes calculs, » lui répondit Kyalani, alors qu’ils gravissaient péniblement la large volée de marches escarpées et en ruines qu’Alysin avait découvert à quelques kilomètres de l’endroit où ils avaient combattu le démon. Il s’agissait vraisemblablement d’une antique chaussée qui devait relier les basses terres au plateau central des centaines d’années auparavant, avant la chute de Thanaclan. Les degrés s’élevaient en serpentant abruptement le long de la falaise, complètement noyés dans la brume.
« Si madame je-sais-tout le dit, t’es pas encore au bout de tes peines, ma pauvre Fira, » lui lança Uthred.
« Au tabou de mes peines, tu veux dire, » plaisanta la prêtresse. « En tout cas, ça fait tabou de chemin ! Ha ha ha ! »
« Ta gueule Fira, » lui intima Alysin qui marchait en tête avec Liam. « A rire comme ça tu vas nous attirer des ennuis, si jamais il y a d’autres saloperies dans le coin.
« T’as raison, Aly, » répondit Fira sans se départir de sa bonne humeur, « Soyons prudent. Après tout, on tient le bon tabou ! Hé hé ! Le bon tabou ! Hi hi hi ! »
« Je vais la tuer, » siffla Uthred.

Uthred poussa un cri de jeune fille, imité par Anariel. Kyalani ne perdit pas un instant. Elle invoqua un mot de pouvoir et un fin rayon verdâtre fusa de sa main tendue pour aller frapper le monstre qui se désagrégea instantanément en fines scories qui se confondirent avec la brume. A la place de l’énorme araignée, il ne restait plus rien.
« Tu…tu as fait ça comment ? » demanda Alysin, interloquée.
« Humm, c’est un sortilège que j’ai récemment appris, mais je n’avais encore pas eu l’occasion de m’en servir, » répondit Kyalani, rose du plaisir d’avoir réussi.
« Et où est passé l’araignée ? » demanda Fira.
« Mon sort l’a désintégrée, Fira. Ou réduite en poussière si tu préfères. »
