Description
I've been a bad geek. Until last week, I had only watched the movie Serenity, the pilot of Firefly, and the final segment of The Train Job.But when I started watching, something itched at the back of my brain. I couldn't figure it out...
Until I saw Jayne and Kaylee interacting exactly like Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie.
So, this here's the crew of the freighter Harmony, Fyreflye class.
---
This is by personality, not role; that's why the pilot of the ship isn't the speedster athlete flyer. Dr. Simon Tam was the least developed character up through "Our Mrs. Reynolds" (the last episode I've seen), so Spike is a bit of a stretch; see the episode "Safe" for the characterization that convinced me.)

Just finished the whole run m'self. Yeah, I'm over a decade late, but I know for a fact that I would not have been personally ready to understand this show too much earlier than now - because I DID see the cinema-released conclusion before even knowing that it had a TV show of backstory to prop it up, and it didn't make an impression except in retrospect.
Anyhoo, I just thought I'd chime in with my own opinion: first the agreements then a little re-allocation. But first and foremost I want to say this is in a friendly spirit because hey - *I* didn't think to do this. You did. You took the first step and it's all too easy to criticize from the sidelines.
Rarity's just so clearly a perfect fit, I don't think ANYone would dispute that.
River's took me a little while to recognize, and thought at first glance you must've doubled up on AJ or something another before glancing over and realizing that non-M6 were used as well. Made me smile for sure. Poor Riverp.
Hawiian shirts and harmless reptilian pets? As well as probably needing to go "by feel" more viscerally when indirectly controlling through that control column all those tons of steel? Gotta be a better match for Pinkie, sorry. (Though I totally get that next to Zoe, Wash can indeed be seen as relatively shy-an-retirin).
So I'd therefore be forced to swap out Kaylee for Flutters as well. She's definitely more comfortable talking either to or about the unruly beast in her charge, which she can innately understand in ways nobody else can.
As the buttoned up, withdrawn intellectual I gotta say that the Doc Simon is better matched to Twilight, especially since you got the one who has trouble with, of all things, unseen faith, allocated to Shepherd Book?!
There's not a direct parallel to the Man of Faith, of course, in the show, but the closest pony I can think with the patience and compassion yet corrective and conscienced nature would have to be teacher Cheerilee.
Now, here's where we get really fuzzy and my thoughts are just as easily disproved.
Jayne's terse nature and letting his fists do the talking, I think that HE's the better match for Big Mac. I don't really think he believes everything is awesome in quite the way RD does (except for Vera), and he for sure as pony poop ain't no element of loyalty!
For THAT, I'll give RD to the Cap'n, actually - who is generally impulsive and although IS awesome, can quite often overestimate personal abilities to personal detriment. They both like to win, but will ultimately choose their crew.
Leaving AJ as Zoe. No problems there for me!
Oh, PS: if you saw the behind the scenes stuff, at least on the same DVD set that I have, then you'll recall that Whedon (as well as, I'm sure, a good chunk of the rest of the cast and crew) considers Serenity herself to be the "tenth character", so in that case I'd put Spike on her. Generally overlooked support, but essential.

A wonderfully immense reply, thank you very much.Β I've been rethinking this in preparation for a crossover fanfic, and I have a better plot device in place, making Zecora equivalent to Book (complete with untold history).Β However, I'm still sticking with Pink-kaylee and Fluttering Leaf on the Wind: I'm going more by personality than specific jobs, actions, or attributes.Β Β Pinkie apparentlyΒ made the Pinkie-candy-copter, and Kaylee is far more rambunctious than Wash.

Mmmh... I'd switch Kaylee and Wash, but other than that...

Seriously? Kaylee and Pinkie Pie are perfect matches, and Wash's sardonic wit reminds me of Fluttershy's more talkative bits of dialogue.

I can see where you're coming from, really, but I think there's something to be said for having it the other way around. Consider... Wash spends his private time making his toy dinosaurs enact war. He's zany. He's in no way shy or withdrawn, and in fact often puts his foot in his mouth because he actively speaks his mind. He's the comic relief. He lightens moods. And consider how Pinkie sounds in her quieter moments. There are times when she becomes withdrawn, fearful, and even sullen. Remember the birthday party incident? Her tantrums? And remember when Wash got to fighting with Zoe? He was throwing himself a right hissy fit before he had that bondage-slash-bonding experience with Mal.
Now, Kaylee, on the other hand... yes, I know she's really cheerful. She's not really shy at all. But then, consider the company she shares. She's the closest any of the crew comes to being "weak and helpless," as Fluttershy would say. I'm not saying she is, really, but she's not exactly a fighter. She earns her keep by caring for the ship, "speaking" to it, relating to and caring for things in ways that others can't. Sound familiar? Serenity, machines, they're her pets. She's a caretaker, of them and of the entire crew. And she's really kind of cutesy, too. When has Wash really been "adorable?" Fluttershy, if she was human, is just the sort of person you could imagine sewing a teddy bear to her clothes and decorating the door to her room. She's sensitive, too, unlike Wash. When Simon offends her she'll sulk. When snobbish debutantes mock the dress she was so proud of she grows genuinely hurt. She's good with kids (well, she hugs one in the movie), she's absolutely inoffensive, and clearly just wants to love and be loved.
So yeah, like I said, I can see where you're coming from. But I think my position's still pretty strong.

You read them very differently than I do, and that's okay; I'm not going to try to convince you otherwise. But I'll explain a bit more of my own reasoning.
Fluttershy as Wash fits more and more every time I research him. From Wikipedia :
"A laid-back guy with a dry and occasionally laconic sense of humor, Wash tends to represent the pragmatic, cut-and-run opinion in any shipboard debate, and often serves as the calming influence in heated arguments. His actions sometimes appear cowardly, but Wash has proven his resolve and willingness to put himself in harm's way and do violence on behalf of his friends on many occasions."
I see more parallels if I don't restrict myself to personality alone. He became a pilot after being raised on a planet so polluted he couldn't see the stars at night. This is a near-perfect mirror of Fluttershy's unhappy childhood in Cloudsdale, and her later life on the ground. The toys are his own little friends, like Fluttershy's animals.
On the other hoof, I can only see Kaylee's girly and extroverted personality as a match for Pinkie Pie. It even extends to her womanly needs in a frank manner I'd never expect from Fluttershy, both the manner in which she was hired, and this choice bit of (edited) dialogue from Serenity:
Pinkie Pie: Goin' on a year now I ain't had nothin' twixt my nethers weren't run on batteries!
Big Macintosh: Oh, Celestia! I can't *know* that!
Rainbow Dash: I could stand to hear a little more.

I feel like Frasier in that one episode where their literary hero cribbed the structure from The Odyssey.
