don't know mythology of norway enough to tell did they actually have fight against giant sea serpent.
but at least in finnish mythology there were giant sea serpent. Ikiturso or Turisas.

The image depicts Thor (Þórr) battling the world-serpent Jörmungandr, a child of Loki. It is one of the 1-on-1 battles to take place at Ragnarök, according to the Eddas, poetic and prose lore dating from the conversion period. These stories likely have some influences from their Christian writers, however. Loki isn't evil, and I personally doubt Thor will die at Ragnarök. Some stories have him already killing Jörmungandr on a fishing trip, meaning the being meant to kill him wouldn't be there. This would mean he could help Odin, Freyr, and other Gods, and the Gods could have victory over the Jötnar.
In any case, these are all excellent works. I love this one and the one of Loki. Hail the Æsir!

My guess would be that these myths from Norway, Sweden, or other nations throughout Germanic Europe might be based on the older mythologies of the Germanic Pagan/Norse religion (such as Ragnarök). So, it would all come from a single source, though different legends in different countries would differ, according to local traditions and how much of the original religious understanding was carried on. Every religion has some end-of-world mythology, though. The Völuspa and other sources on Ragnarök were influenced by the Christian Book of Revelations, and I imagine other, later myths were too. It would just really depend on different countries changes since their Christianization.
For the record, I am a Norse polytheist/heathen, a follower of the old Gods/Æsir.

well I do think our mythology at the end got some effects from Christianity, like our national epic says on the last verse. in short, women got pregnant from eating berry and born a son that she name King of karelia. Väinämöinen who was the hero and great sorcerer. leaved because he felt offended, but he promised to return when he was most needed.
story surely tells from how virgin maria give birth to jesus.
tho we had some world end story, but it didn't really lead end of everything as it would generally mean

Every once in awhile I come across a work of art that makes me doubt my own artistic skills; this is one of them.
