Just on the outskirts of Tabira, another duo was traversing the dirt roads. The first was minun in a ruby red vest with a white cravat and a brown messenger bag slung over one shoulder. Thick glasses rested on the bridge of his nose…which was currently deep in a book even as he walked. His large ears were laid back, the tips coming to his knees. His companion was a plusle with a sapphire blue head scarf and bandana tied around her neck, leather shoulder pads, and a dark brown belt pulled loosely around her hips. Her ears stuck up, waving back and forth as she walked. She pulled on a pair of fingerless black gloves, flexing her fingers before punching one fist into her palm. She was speaking in rapid, excited sentences as she pointed out every and any point of interest she saw as they travelled along.

“What do you think it’s gonna be like? Tabira? Things look too…earthy around here if you ask me,” the plusle continued on in an energetic ramble. The minun beside her repressed a sigh of frustration. His little sister’s senseless questions were making it near impossible for him to read.

“That is an odd remark to make, Stella, considering our humble origins of growing up on a farm,” he replied evenly, not looking away from his book.

“I know that, Stefan! That’s not what I meant!” Stella huffed, “We left home to get away from all that ‘living a simple but peaceful life’ stuff. I want Tabira to be the opposite of back home. I want it to be full of life and opportunities…or better yet danger!” Stefan finally let out the sigh he had been holding back, looking up from his book which he finally had to admit he would never get any further in while his sister was distracting him so.

“There is no doubt in my mind that you will find plenty of uncouth activities to partake in, dear sister,” he muttered knowingly. Stella folded her arms across her chest and narrowed her eyes at her older brother.

“What’s that supposed ta mean?” she demanded, a challenging fire in her sapphire gaze.

“Nothing at all,” he said flatly, his ruby gaze now focused on the path in front of him. Not sure if she had won that argument or not, Stella stuck out her tongue at her brother before falling into silence.

The silence between the two electric rabbits didn’t last long, though, as Stella quickly forgot that she was supposed to be mad and began to ramble excitedly about their destination again. “What do you think the guilds will be like? I mean, really be like? I hope the Trackers are just as daring as in all those stories Dad used to tell us.” Stefan inclined his head, tapping his chin thoughtfully.

“While our father may have exaggerated some details for the sake of a more captivating tale, I’m sure that his and Mother’s stories of the guilds are mostly based in fact,” he said. “I am in fact eaten up with curiosity to see what the Scholars are truly like, to see some of the scientific marvels they have no doubt discovered,” he admitted after a moment.

“What about a name?” the plusle suddenly asked. Stefan gave her a puzzled look. “For our team, obviously! It has to be something cool,” she explained impatiently. She screwed up her face to look deeply thoughtful. “How’s about…Electrophilic!” she suddenly blurted out with a snap of her fingers, “It totally screams ‘us’!”

“That’s not even a word,” Stefan retorted sourly.

“Yes it is! You’ve just never heard of it before,” she argued back.

“There are very few words in modern language I had not heard, read, or written.  But if you continue to stubbornly insist, I can look it up,” he said as he reached into his bag for one of the dictionaries he always kept on hand.

Stella groaned. What did I do to get such a lame nerd of a brother? “Never mind. Point is that It would totally work as a team name for us…because we’re both electric types and…and it just sounds awesome,” she argued back.

“Fine, call our team whatever you wish,” Stefan acquiesced as he grew tired of this thread of conversation. It was then that he noticed the path ahead of him was darker. In fact, everything around him seemed to be cast in shadow. He looked up to see the Great Tree of Tabira looming over them like an emerald giant. While the siblings had been caught up arguing, they had not realized how much ground they had covered or that they had arrived in the heart of Tabira.

“Wow,” Stella gasped as she looked up as well, “That’s one heck of a tree.”

“It’s more than just ‘a heck of a tree’. Tabira’s Great Tree is legendary. All the guilds are based in or around it,” he stated matter-of-factly, becoming excited himself as he dug through his bag for the book he had purchased during their journey about Tabira’s founding and history before opening it up to educate his sister, “There’s a rich history of legends and lore that tell about this tree. The story goes that there were four heroes, one of which was a tropius, who rose up to defend the land from terrible beasts and-”

“Yeah, yeah, I get it,” Stella muttered as she cut him off with a wave of her hand, “I don’t need a lecture. So, now that we’re here…we should go check out the guilds! I want to start building reputation with the Trackers right away!”

“No, we should see about finding a more permanent residence. We have just enough money saved up to buy a modest living space…which we will need if we are constantly working with the guilds,” Stefan said as he attempted to curb his sister’s wild enthusiasm. “But, if we were going to build reputation with a guild, it should be with the Scholars first and foremost,” he added under his breath. Stella stuck her hands on her hips with a clear look of defiance on her face.

“Who would want to go work with more super dorks like you?” Stefan tightened his grip on his bag strap before pushing his glasses up on his nose, his gaze equally irritated.

“Who would want to work with more reckless fools like you?” The two siblings glared at each other, sparks beginning to fly from their cheeks.

“FINE! Do whatever boring chores you want! I’ll just go by myself!” Stella shouted before storming off.

“I’ll greatly appreciate the peace and quiet!” Stefan shot back as he tucked his book under his arm and went in the other direction.

“Uptight nerd!”

“Irresponsible child!”

Here we get to meet my second team, Electrophilic! I decided to kill two birds with one stone by weaving together Emblem's Flame and Team Electrophilic for Ch. 1. Generally, I'll alternate between the viewpoints of the two teams (though they will interact with each other on occasion) with Emblem's Flame being mostly written and Electrophilic being more hybrid like this with a little picture and a story to go with it. At least...that's the plan. We'll see how it goes!

So, this part is mainly to introduce Stefan and Stella and demonstrate how their dynamic works. The constant banter between them was fun to write...though I'm only lukewarm on how the art turned out. Something about the anatomy is bugging me... No tasks completed just yet, but that will be soon to come!

Enjoy!

I was going to ask what electrophilic meant until I read this and realized its technically not a word. Still, I think its a cool and creative name for the team.

Thanks! Electrophilic is actually the title of a poem I once read and it just seemed to fit Stefan & Stella...but yes, it isn't a real word.

I have to agree with Stella. Who cares if it's a real word or not, so long as it sounds cool.
