Description Tickle Bird
©2012, 29" by 20", Watercolour

The idea for this painting, of an osprey pulling a fish up out of the water, came from a discussion I was having with a photographer a while back about how much she really wanted to get a picture of an osprey fishing, but every one that she'd taken was blurry because - with all of the splashing water - her auto-focus couldn't figure out what to focus on. I looked at this as a challenge, and set out to create an image of a fishing osprey that would be posed just right, and would of course be perfectly in focus.

This unusual name for the painting owes itself to a game that I play with my two-and-a-half year old twins. When I'm changing their shirts, I ask them to put their arms up in the air so that I can pull their tops off over their head. Of course, as I do it, I always take the opportunity to tickle them under the arms, and they giggle happily. Anyhow, when I was partway finished this painting (I had the osprey and the fish done, and was just about to start the background), my son Daniel looked at it and recognized the pose, as it was the same one that he was always asked to assume when I changed his shirt, so he pointed at the painting and said "Tickle Bird". The net result is that changing their shirts has become a lot more difficult now because, when they put their arms up in the air, they start flapping them like a bird would.

This painting is also a testament to the usefulness of social media for collaboration. When I was first planning it, I sent a request out to my Facebook friends looking for pictures of a fishing osprey to work from. I'm always amazed at the talents that people have that they keep hidden - it turns out that I have several friends who are also great photographers. This painting is based on roughly a half dozen different photographic images, as well as some elements directly from my imagination. Thanks so much to everyone who helped me out, as well as those who encouraged me along the way as I posted progress shots online.

Thanks! It's watercolours, but I used them very dry. It's 29 by 20 inches. I just posted a step by step with a link to a TV interview where I show the framed original to give you a good idea of exactly how big it is.

Thanks so much Jamie,
Somebody has already pointed me to your gallery saying that my painting looks very similar to your shots. It's eerie how close the backgrounds are. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the reference shots and video I used were taken in the same location!
Thanks for the offer. If I ever revisit the same theme, I'll keep it in mind.

Scotland eh? I was showing my painting at an exhibit last weekend, and was talking to an expert on ospreys. That was scary enough - I was waiting for him to point out errors (like maybe the osprey didn't actually eat trout or something), and he was telling me that the osprey is one of the only animals where the same species is found everywhere in the world.

Ah slightly wrong there sorry to say. The ones in the Americas which go to south America in the winter and North to breed are slightly different from the ons that go to Africa in the winter and Europe to breed which are again slightly different to the ones that Breed in South Australia and winter in North Australia. but their differences are very small !

Ah, so apparently he wasn't quite the expert he claimed to be! Nice to have access to a real expert!

lol, I only found out when I sent a photo of one from America to the local wildlife team about 7 years ago and the immediately noticed that it wasn't a European one. They they told me what I just told you. But really I don't mind I just love watching them whenever I get the chance

dwaynerjames In reply to Jamie-MacArthur [2012-07-13 11:41:49 +0000 UTC]

I'd like to say the same, but whenever I go out to watch them, they just stare down at me from their nests. One day!
There's a tiny bird called the kingfisher in Canada (not sure how widespread they are) that fishes in much the same way as the osprey. I'm thinking of continuing the theme, and painting one sometime.

I have quite a few kingfisher species in my gallery but only one in flight which was the pied , which is not the one you have . I think there are near 107 species world wide! I can point you to people who have fantastic flight shots though !

I just clued in - is that a kingfisher as your avatar? And here I was introducing the bird as if you might not know what it was!
Thanks for sharing the links. I think I'll definitely find some inspiration there!

Watercolorists just blow me away. I've never gotten into water colors...just seems too difficult. I do air brushing. This is a magnificent work and the detail is amazing. Great art.

Thanks! I like watercolours mostly because I'm lazy. I can mix a paint, and let it dry, but still be able to use it for months. You can't do that with oils or acrylics

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Darkstar1013 In reply to dwaynerjames [2012-07-13 16:07:04 +0000 UTC]

I do exactly the opposite. I usually cut my paints with a bit of alcohol so that the paint will dry quickly. The downside is that you have to have GREAT ventilation. Cause you can get drunk from breathing alcohol fumes as well as drinking the stuff. >

Ha! I hadn't thought of that. I have a friend who puts her acrylics in the freezer to keep them from drying. Only thing is, she has to wait for them to thaw out before she can paint!

They make tiny plastic container that are all connected together. With little pop up lids. I use those with acrylics. They last a pretty long time (well not forever).

Nice to hear from you.
