Description
Last spring I made shadow puppets of lady Amalthea, king Haggard, the Red Bull and the Unicorn from Peter S. Beagle's "the Last Unicorn". I had plans for a Prince Lir, Molly Grue and Schmendrick as well, but discovered how *bleep*ing long it would take just to do the main four. That's because of all the piercing I had to do. Their designs are loosely based on malasian and javanese shadow puppets although they are made with copper rather than parchment and leather.Technically, you wouldn't actually see the puppet, just the shadow it cast, but I did a little ornamentation anyway- in this case extensive chasing to give her a unique texture. She was originally super-shiny copper, but you can see where she's starting to take on the natural patina of copper.
The Unicorn is the most complicated of the puppets I made, and I had to be very careful to keep her graceful but still a working puppet and give her similarities to the human Amalthea. Her back leg is articulated at hip, knee and pastern, her foreleg is articulated at shoulder and knee, she's also articulated on her neck and at all her control rods (all THREE of them!). She looks really fierce when you lower her head and neck so she can "charge".
(it is a heck of a lot harder to use a shadow puppet than I ever realized- I got to put on a short play of TLU for my metalwork class and made a complete idiot of myself)

This is amazing! It's wonderfully intricate! I'm wondering what you used to cut the bronze? Also if you know of a type of bronze sheet that might be able to cut by something like a scalpol or something less sharp like scissors? I'm doing my AS Art exam soon on shadow puppets. Thanks
P.s. Also, does the bronze colour show up at all when casted as a shadow because I sometimes find that the screen often picks up some of the colour (which I don't really mind either)

It's actually done in copper, not bronze. I used a jeweler's saw to do the cutting- which I don't recommend if you don't have practice using one! Most people break a LOT of saw blades, but it's a specialty of mine. The copper's fairly thick too, 20g if I recall correctly.
You could get really thin sheets of copper (30g maybe?) that could be cut with scissors or exacto knives but they would also crumple really easily. You might try a good stiff paper instead, like cardstock.
And no, all the shadows I got from these were black.

damn, this is beautiful! I've cut metal in metal shop, but you make this look so easy and graceful! Mine turned out jagged and rough. Ironically I made a Unicorn lamp. So beautiful!!!

>.< no, can you believe that? I came to FL for college, so it's still up in Michigan. It wasn't that pretty because I didn't have time to paint it. I only had time to make it a working lamp for the regionals. I got 4th place outta a bunch of schools and different types ranks, so I felt proud. I made the shade a simple cylinder with big star cuts in it. But I glued fabric on the inside so the light wouldn't glare through the holes. Then the bottom I made 3 unicorn side profiles, goatee and all, and stuck them together in another cylinder shape to make the bottom a little heavier. I should work on it paint wise, now that I'm inspired lol

Faved.
Shadow-puppetry is kinda neat, and your design of Amalthea is pretty spot-on imo. Rankin:Bass always had such neat Unicorn desings imo.
Very nice work.

I'm dazzled! I can't beleive the amount of work that must have gone into all of the tiny details in her mane, the fluffs on her ankle, etc. I can see that you strive for perfection You did a beautiful job of making her look so graceful and delicate, but to still have a workable puppet.

That looks great... you did a nice job with the unicorn's form, as she does have the delicate look you were going for. The fact that you could do this with a functional moving figure is impressive.

Wow. I looked at all of your shadow puppets and I have to say they are LOVELY. I really admire your metal work. You definately have a lot of talent. Most of all I like the eye and the nose on the unicorn actually. They're very elegant.

Your skills continue to impress. I've got to say, this is a thing of beauty, I deeply admire your metalworking skills. I enjoyed metal-work while I was at college, in fact I have more metalwork samples than anything else
The thing about it all is, its so neat (your work here I mean) and clean. Everything in this piece is well defined and yet has such a elegance about it. I feel a touch of Art Nouveau hinted at here and there, probably her tail 'poof' has the most nouveau-ness about it. Gah, I'm in love.

Ah, you've touched on one of my inspirations! Art nouveau does indeed play a big role in a lot of my art. You've also hit on one of my neuroses (how do you spell that anyway?)- cleanliness. I have tried, but I simply can NOT do abstract art. It just does not work. And I like things to have well defined edges. I swear, it carries over into everything I do. Even my sketches are clean. I'm gonna have to learn to work messy!

It's not often you get to see someone do a design in a style that is fluid and unique, realistic in anatomy but completely exaggerated...and yet still keep it looking good and real in it's own right. Reminds me of a lot of Greek art. It's like it's own world of style and you've crafted these all so perfectly to that style, from human to animal and with unique moving parts.

Its funny you would say that- Greek art (especially the old pottery) was a big influence on my art! I used to rabidly study the mythology.

It's definately awesome and feel Greek like what's emblazoned on the old goldleaf vases and such. I would hope you'd finish the set but I could see the painstakingness of it.
