Description
ENJOY! FIRST TUTORIAL EVER.Quick edit's note. either use some sort of crayon or strong marking pencil on the camping mat, if that doesn't work use a sharpie. Sharpie will work well but the mat Absorbs like crazy so when you handle it you WILL get your hands a bit dirty. will remod tutorial for updated version later when kinks in neck are gone XD

Well it would depend on what you plan to use it on. Snaps are nice when it's simple light weight armor, Velcro if it's something fairly big, if it's a big chunk of armor I'd use elastics or something

Well, it is quite a "block" armor. The torso part is quite a unique part. Here's a reference pic [link]
There is no problem for me with making the arms, but the neck and the torso are quite dubtfull. maybe it can be made with as a single piece with velcro straps?

That's why your tutorial will be very helpful for me! XD
I don't think the pinnacle can be made by camping mat, however what do you think for arms, hands and torso?

you can use craft foam for the arms and hands, as for the torso, it's kind of hard to see what it looks like from that ref alone

Great tutorial, very simple to follow!
I'm going to try this out for some larp armour and see how it holds up. Might need some stronger glue...

Hot glue is pretty tough, also when you glue onto the mat, the mat absorbs the glue in a bit, that stuff seeps in pretty deep!

I find that it dries really solid and doesn't have a lot of flex, so it tends to just break for me when I use it on anything that needs to take an impact. Could just be the glue rods I'm using, though!

maybe, hot glue loses flexibility the more in mass it gets. depend on how much you spread around determines it's flexibility.

Really cool, I'm faving. I never thought camping mats to be a potential material for armor since they are so soft, so kudos
(though I'm making my Edward Elric automail arm and leg out of 1mm aluminum.. )

Ooh this looks very intruiging. I'll have to try it. I've heard of using camping mat foam to make understructures for weapons, but never for armor.

it's quite handy. I wouldn't recommend this for all kinds of armor but simple stuff or large things this works great (though i did see someone building a tekkaman blade costume using this stuff! astounding)

Does the mat naturally bend like that in the first picture or was there something you did to it to make it do that?

DynamiteBreakdown In reply to sezaku-the-vampi [2010-05-31 04:42:08 +0000 UTC]
the mat comes in rolls so it has some bend to it from the start but What i did was took a second piece of camping mat, and bent it further and glued it together to force its shape.

Using camping mat material is the genius I was going at. I've been using craftfoam before but I sometimes feel like it isn't enough "umph" so to say.
