The USS Enterprise was peacefully enroute to her next assignment when Helmsman Sulu suddenly exclaimed, "Captain! Sensors are detecting a temporal rift opening up at extreme range."

Vulcan First Officer and Science Officer Spock verified, "Confirmed Captain. Temporal rift is there, but now shrinking." He paused. "Sensors are detecting a vessel with sporadic life readings being pulled in."

Captain Kirk answered with concern in his voice and issued several orders in rapid succession, "Sporatic life readings? It may be inhabited. Mr. Sulu, close to transporter and tractor range. We may have a rescue. Mr. Spock, any ID on that vessel? Mr. Bailey, clean up that disturbance. I want a better view."

Mr. Sulu and Mr. Bailey acknowledged him, and complied with their orders. There was however, no immediate response from Mr. Spock which caused Captain Kirk to repeat his order. Something he didn't like to do with him or any other officer for that matter.

"Mr. Spock, any ID on THAT vessel?"

"Apologies, sir. An old Earth expression of disbelief comes to mind."

Dr. McCoy, who was also on the bridge asked, "Really? What expression?"

"Are you freaking kidding me?"

Dr. McCoy and Captain Kirk looked at one another in bemused disbelief as he explained, "Sir, that ship ID's as the Jupiter II launched in 1997, and was presumed lost in space shortly after launch. Alpha Control, the vessel's launch facility, lost contact and was never able to reestablish communication."

Captain Kirk and Dr. McCoy opened their mouths to both speak, but Mr. Spock cut them off and continued, "There is more. It is generally believed that Khan Noonian Singh sabotaged the mission with a mole working within the Alpha Control medical branch."

That little nugget of information caused Captain Kirk to issue more orders, "Lt. Uhura, try to raise them. Mr. Sulu, increase closing speed."

Mr. Bailey spoke, Sir, Look! Our image is stabilizing."

Captain Kirk now saw, with greater clairity, a saucer shaped vessel spinning on her central axis further into the temporal rift. It was going to be close.

Mr. Spock spoke ominously from his station, "Sir, rift closure speed is increasing, and life forms are definite. I'm now detecting seven humanoid life forms where crew manifest only mentions six. Fascinating."

Captain Kirk stared awestruck at the view screen. There was something very old and visceral about the endangered ship out there. He recalled his childhood grade school days. Like the centuries old story of the missing aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart, this was another ongoing story of mystery and intrigue. Unsolved, it was one that kept coming back again and again. What had happened to the Jupiter II?

Lt. Uhura interrupted, "Sir, I have audio!" She put it on the ship's speakers. It was very broken up and garbled due to the temporal interference, but it was there.

"Pro....sor....John...son....ter II....rift...can...ou...help...us?"

The rift was closing even faster now, and the Jupiter II was going in!

"Mr. Bailey, EMERGENCY TRACTOR POWER!

The bridge crew stared at the shocking scene now unfolding. The Jupiter II had been pulled in, and the rift had closed. What had once been a vessel of exploration and hope was now gone and all that remained was a peaceful star field.

Captain Kirk swore, "DAMN, we were so close!"

Dr. McCoy spoke sadly, "Jim, we were just too far away. If we had gone closer, we'd have gone with them." Kirk nodded slowly. He knew that, but it didn't mean he had to like it!

Mr. Spock spoke again. "Just before the rift closed I was able to get more detailed data. The other end is now opening up somewhere at the far side of the Delta Quadrant."

"Delta...Quadrant?"

"Yes."

He ran his hand through his hair in resignation. There was nothing more they could do here now, so they had to return to their original course and mission.

"I see. Very well. Lt. Uhura, report this entire encounter to Starfleet. The historical branches will be most interested."

"Mr. Sulu, put us back on our original heading."

"Aye sir."

"Mr. Spock. I'm going to my quarters to compose an addition for Lt. Uhura's report. You have the bridge."

He acknowledged and the last thing he heard from Captain Kirk as he entered the Turbolift was a low whisper, "Delta Quadrant? I hope they made it!"

Grab your motion tracker and do anything BUT turn on the lights! Something might be lurking nearby.
