Looks great, looks like an actual old Sega game sprite. I like how her head tilts slightlly from left to right as she runs, it makes her look more 3 dimentional.

Thanx.

Yeah, I was trying to replicate the games animation near perfectly (though the sprite itself may be a bit small compared to the original characters).

Heheh, you should sick Metal Sonic on her. But if that's the case, I think she'll be running a lot more frantically than that.

Cue anime run-esque sprite.

Looks great, though technically it has too many colors. The limit is 15, as one has to be transparent.

Very nicely done though.

Thanx.

Crap. Any suggestion which color should get the chop (perhaps two actually I have other sprites with another shade of grey)?

Ok, I just took a look at the gif again (sorry for the delay) and came up with this:

Your main problem is that your sprites aren't clean. There are a lot of duplicate colors. You have 24 colors altogether, and that can be whittled down to 16 by making sure all your sprites use the same colors. Perhaps a paletted image might work?

Aside from that, you nearly have 16 as it is. I would get rid of the lightest red, and the darkest muzzle color. Neither of those are really necessary. The dark muzzle color can be substituted with black, or nothing in most cases, and the rest can just simply work with themselves for the lighting.

Also, you want to make sure all your color values are multiples of 32, with the limit at 224. (0, 32, 64, 96, 128, 160, 192, 224) I would suggest downloading the HivePal utility to work on your palettes.

In fact, here's a palette I came up with by editing your colors here.
[link]

Granted, this was before I noticed you said you had another grey, so swap out that darkest muzzle color and you should be good to go.

Fix up those issues, and you should have few sprite problems should you want to insert Sally into any game (VRAM, compatibility with other palettes, blah blah)

Thanx for the tips and the pallette.

Yeah, I know the colors aren't exactly accurate (Photoshop doesn't really allow for accurate texturing like that it seems). Truthfully the colors really just existed as place holders so as to know how the characters was meant to be shaded, as the sheet was designed for multiple games and I didn't know if the colors would have to be refined for each one. If you wanna sneak peak at it, here is a sample of the sheet:

[link]

A lot of sprites have been added or refined since I uploaded this, it will have all the basic sprites necessary for Sonic 1, 2, 3 and Knuckles, some key ones for CD and Chaotix and a load of custom ability ones (eg. kick moves, her Mars concept move set and other variations like a non-spin jump and such). I plan to upload this (as well as the planned Bunnie one) onto DA when it's all done.

HOLY SLAG, that is an IMPRESSIVE sheet! Way to go!

Good thing all you really need to fix up is palette stuff. Definitely reshade where that lightest red is.

Applying what I said earlier should have your sprites come out like this:
[link] (a sample, I didn't bother to fix the RGB values)

Granted, it's not as vibrant as yours but it fits the Genesis with little problems.

Now as far as working it into each game, you'll definitely have to play around with other objects a bit. For example, in Sonic 1 and CD, a lot of enemies are dependent on Sonic's blues. Sonics 2 and 3k see him share a palette with Tails. Also all games have him share palettes with Eggman. It's not too much to work around. A lot of things can be taken care of by simply changing palette lines.

But yeah, keep this up man. Also, feel free to join Retro at any time if you need help.

Tried it out with the Sonic 1 sprites:

I think all the colors are right. I might have to wait a while before I try SonMapEd though, the tutorial is a little hard to figure with most of the images down.

That's very good!

Just a few things:

1. Using that palette, you'd have to remap or recolor a ton of objects, because it removes the yellow and the grays which are used by..everything X_X

Some examples are the spikes, the sign post, the HUD, Eggman, and some enemies.

2. I've gotta say, you've done excellently with just one gray!

3. What I've found to work best with SonMapED is to have a sprite sheet that outlines your mappings already. That way you know how many extra blocks you need. I can provide one that uses Sonic's sprites, I just need to find it.

E-122-Psi In reply to Aquaslash [2009-12-23 01:07:01 +0000 UTC]

Thanx.

1 and 2. Hmm, I could perhaps dispose of the darkest mussle tone in favor of another gray, the yellow I suppose could be replaced with the light mussle color without it looking too out of place.

3. Thanx, I appreciate you making all this effort to help out. I think I will be going 'baby steps' anyway, just trying getting the basic sprites working in place of Sonic's before I start refining the other sprites or anything.

Will I just need SonMapEd (and a ROM dissasembly) or will other software be required? I heard HivePal is used to change the pallettes for example.

Thanx.

Oh, but it's far from done. I want this thing to be HUGE.

I have made some slight refinements since I uploaded that, for example her 'facing screen' sprite isn't as thin.

I really appreciate you giving me pointers on these, I want this sheet to look pro. I understand that compromises have to be made to make them to work with the other sprites and details so it's nice to get advise around it. But, yeah, I think I'll need pointers from Retro when I get down to implementing them and such.

What is she running from? Hopefully not more spider bots, they just want to keep her comfy and snug in her web.

Hmm, something to consider for another animation then, though I wonder if a hack or fan game could make use of a 'struggling cocooned Sal sprite'.

Yes, I would pay to have a wiggling cocooned sally Icon for myself. Oh and I hope you got my notes. What about a struggling Sonic and Sal sprites or possibly wiggling together making look like they were snuggling.

These are something to keep in mind for my project I guess.
