Description
Well, another contest. This time it's coloring Final Fight Double Impact byEarlier in the month I had finished a couple freelance jobs and I was waiting to see if there was going to be any revisions, in the mean time I wanted something to do. so I decided to Paint this.
I wanted it to be a straight painting, a no frills digital paint job, no glows, screen effects no overlays. just 3 layers line art color and flats. It's probably just me but a lot of color work out there is shining, glowing or burned and I just felt this piece didn't need that. Originally, I wanted a kind of arcade box texture in the background and a stincker effect on the image. But In the end it was distracting so I removed it.
Visually I wanted to build a separation between the two sides. I painted each side withΒ different light sources and in different color palettes.
The Final FightΒ game in general has a much cooler palette, lots of blues and such. So I decided to paint that side color to reflect the game. I also went back to the original colors of the characters. Cody's hair is more orange than blond, guy's Gi is more of a rust color and Andor's outfit was red.
Magic Sword was a more of a warm game lots of candle light and earthy colored backgrounds. So I painted the Magic sword side to reflect that. The biggest issue with the magic sword side is that there is little to no reference on the game. i was resourceful though and found reference on all the characters shown weather it was a sprite or the painting by Akiman.
In the end I really don't care if I win the contest it was fun to to just paint this. Probably the only time I'll ever get to work on something by Alvin Lee. But who knows.
Cheers Folks,

I love how smooth your colors look. This definitely has to be with the finalists at least.

All kinds of amazing, brotha.
The AD part of my brain thinks that you can still push the different palettes a tiny bit more but that doesn't take anything away from what you've got here. A really awesome job.
If Pat Lee doesn't like this, then, well...I don't have anything nice to say so I won't say it.

lol Cody and Guy get so little play, as well. Granted, they're both in SF4, but even in their SFA1/3 days, no love. Final Fight was definitive fighter for me, when I was a kid, it needs more general love imo
I was gonna do this contest thinger, but yeah, you've nailed it, as far as I see hahahaha

i agree, a lot of work i see here, though beautiful as it may be, uses far too much special effects found in photoshop or what have you, even though it's done on computer, i still appreciate the traditional approach to this piece where you didn't rely on filters or glow effects... some good looking work

This is awesome! You definitely did a good job of separating the games with different color palates. And I really appreciate what you've done just using color and not the glows and stuff as you mentioned. Some people rely on that stuff too much I think, and it sometimes feels like they're trying to make up for their lack of talent. Your skills definitely have nothing to hide.

Oh, interesting way of presentation, that the sword divide the dimensions to show different characters one side on another.

That's really well done! Much better than my submission.
Well, best of luck to the both of us, doing it for the fun of it.
