Description
•Creature name: Knibbler {herbacarpos coloniae}•Environment: Knibblers usually make their homes in any habitat with patchy or inconsisent vegetation and firm soils, They are not found in dense jungles, deserts, or overly cold climates. They also cannot be found in places which regularly flood, and avoid being too close to a water source. They are most likely to be found within temperate and tropical grasslands, savannahs, and temperate brushlands.
•Niche: These fill a niche similar to a naked mole rat's
•Explanation for appearance: Knibblers are a relative of the sapient cuttlefish, and have many of their characteristics. They walk on two muscular arms assisted by their tentacles, in an odd, loping gait. Their bright colorations identify each member of the colony according to it's role. They originally evolved a greasy hairy coating to keep them warm on cooler nights, as they evolved in a temperate grassland where it could get cold during winter, however some kinbbler colonies have spread to warmer, more lush habitats.
•Explanation for why it evolved the way it did: These cephalopods are somewhat close relatives of the sapient cuttlefish, only they are of mild intelligence, and never developed tool use. Due to their incredibly social nature, competition with other groups, and need to defend against predation by living together, they became eusocial, with each member of the colony performing a different task {most of all the females are sterile.}
•Animal it diverged from: giant Australian cuttlefish
•Diet: Knibblers are strict herbivores, feeding only on grasses, forbs, herbs, and weeds found low to the ground.
•Hunting behavior: More kinbblers are born as foragers than any other role. Their primary job is to collect food for the colony. These busy knibblers are commonly seen in small parties, sitting while they rapidly chew on grasses and other low to the ground vegetation {earning them their name.} They have small pouches in their cheeks where they store this food. Soldiers will always accompany the party, as these brightly colored, defenseless cephalopods are highly vulnerable to predation when unattended. After collecting food, they return to store it in special chambers deep within the home, where the ambient temperature is the coldest {acting as a sort of natural fridge.}
•Prey to: kinbblers rarely worry about predation, as many members of the colony are born as soldiers. A soldier's main job in the colony is to defend and protect it's members. They may be found patrolling the outside of the mound and attending foragers on their outings, although the majority of them will be within the mound, ready to act if anything tries to enter. They are among the more communicative knibblers, who will use a variety of vocalizations with each other during a battle. Soldiers are equipped with retractable barbs at the end of their tentacles.
