Description This is the largest bird on the island and the biggest hoopoe, size of a condor. They behave as scavengers of large animals, flying in the night especially over highlands and mountains but having a range that is island-wide. Their thick musculature and powerful skulls allow them to break bone. Even their offspring chew on sticks in order to prepare for crunching on gnimbles, lothborros, and garhaquels when adults. These are formidable and, when they are startled, will hiss, spreading their wings and flaring their back while hopping aggressively at the threat (which is generally only rival nightbreakers who battle over meals.) However, they prefer not to fight, and are quite low-energy, preferring to wheel in the skies. Nightbreakers have excellent senses of smell and sight, having massive dark eyes for night vision. Breeding season is the only time these highly territorial animals interact. They have little in the way of mating displays, aside from getting fluffy and beating at other males with their wings. They flock together at oases, especially Venazius although many attend smaller lesser known lakes. Here, they lay up to 20 mottled eggs and bury them in the warm sand by the shore. Upon hatching, the precocial chicks will be swarmed by hungry predators who show up for the buffet. The few survivors will flutter up into the trees for safety.
