Irritated at birth because she was named for having pale eyes, Shayla spent her childhood looking after her siblings when her mother went out to hunt and stopping her baby sister from jumping out of the nest. Although the middle youngster, Shayla was often neglected by her fellows because she was far more eager to learn and practice then to gambol around with them! The adults thought it was a little unnatural for her to be like that, until they realised that the clan oracle was starting to teach her and Shayla was learning the hows and whys of nature – including the important fact that Razorwing dragons were incredibly fragile once they began to fly and that keeping your weight down and wings in good condition were the vital points of flight.
By the time she was three years old and an adult, Shayla had quite a name for herself as the fastest flyer around and the best driver when hunting, using her natural high screech to startle animals into running until they tripped or collapsed from exhaustion. She was very smart and clever, devising new strategies at catching large prey by driving them off of cliffs so that no member of the clan was at any risk at all. Her intelligence and her ability to lead the hunting parties got her attention from males in the Blue Vein Razorwing Clan, and the young leader Gilby was soon attempting to court her.
But when Shayla sought out her old oracle friend she was informed that Gilby would be cursed in due time and so heartily refused. She had put her faith in the words of the gods that she would never get involved with a cursed being, but sadly this did not work out. Her mother went against her and decided to arrange the marriage despite her wishes not to. When Gilby came to collect her for the ceremony, Shayla took to the air and ran for it. She kept speaking over and over to herself that the gods did not want her to be with him so the gods would never let him catch her! But though Shayla was fast, Gilby was much more agile and in one blow to her left wing he knocked her balance in the air and Shayla crashed.
To her surprise her wings were not damaged, but her left hip was dislocated from the landing and she could not move. Gilby approached, but the fearsome swelling in the top of the limb made her appear heavy and Gilby, a shallow creature indeed, was disgusted and immediately decided he did not want her but instead her younger sister. Shayla was grateful to have escaped but in serious agony, her clan decided her treachery against their wishes meant exile and they turned their backs upon her. Only her old friend returned to assist her healing by pushing the limb back in, and warned her that she would never be permitted to hunt in the land again.
Shayla was confused but carried on her way through the mountains until an unfortunate turn of events led to her being captured by the residents of Storm Valley – or more specifically the two idiotic brothers Fulgur and Tonare! They dragged her in by holding her wings up so she screamed and begged them not to break her poor wings. To her horror, they then held her for a lottery to the other dragon lords that had gathered for war, and Shackles quickly silenced them. Everyone assumed he’d found a new snack to tide him over, but his fascination in her eyes was startling and despite his normal manners Shackles led her to his den and treated her almost like a pet. He kept her in excellent condition, protected her from everyone, and did his best to make sure that she was fed whatever she wanted.
He also found that they had a unique fascination in anatomy and physiology, especially that of wings, and to her own surprise he began to tell her his stories of what he used to do, how he used to experiment with certain ideas. His thoughts were intriguing and Shayla was all too eager to assist him in some of his beliefs in the uses of wings for varying things, after-all if she annoyed him he would eat her and if she tried to escape the storm dragons that formed border patrol would have killed her too!
Shackles showered her with praise and together they learnt the temperatures that wings could cope with, the kind of air that was important for the most efficient flight, and all sorts relating to wings dynamics. Shayla was quite enamoured with his intelligence and to her own surprise when she came into season was more then eager to fool around with him – though nothing came from it. But her enjoyment with her master changed when she overheard one of his plans with his usual cohort to dissect her wings! Shayla was terrified, her wings were very important to her and so she snuck around the valley in search of someone that might protect her. It came from a very unlikely source – Carpe Noctem.
Steaming from the scar he’d received from his brother Raphael, Shayla found the unhappy male and made overtures of friendship. Immediately she was pinned down and threatened, but something made Carpe Noctem amused and he released her. She was lucky he already had a soak by that point; otherwise it could have been her! Even so, when Shackles came to take her, Carpe slaughtered him and offered her the chance to dissect his wings. Then he led her around as his best hunter and most efficient counsel and Shayla was quite startled by his intentions and interest.
As time went on by she became his favourite female, beneath his mate of course, and even lady Poison had a curious attachment to her. Shayla was also of great use in taking on Hastings when he got bored and decided to crash around Carpe’s home. He was suddenly having his ears nipped and his tender tongue was pulled out for a second time by the swift-winged Shayla. Hastings went after her but was too slow in the air, Shayla got away and Carpe was able to appear and see him all the rest of the way off. Shayla was favoured by her new family, and never cared about the other Razorwings again.
