There’s Time and Then There’s EternityA Dragon!Reno x Reader Story
He always had a bone to pick with you about something and yet for the past week you’d known him it had all been centred on the same thing. You hadn’t scratched the surface of his true self either because every conversation was bathed in cynicism and boredom. Although the others that had met your strange companion seemed to think that was all he could be… Reno was a complicated guy.
Well the reason he was complicated, as he loved to remind you, was that he had been a dragon only six days ago when you’d been offered to him as a sacrifice for being a witch. Whatever idiocy had encouraged you to try and help the locals fight off an oppressive baron, using your sorcery had only encouraged them to turn upon you. Like someone with as sweet a smile or as cute a pair of eyes as you could be a dark enchantress! You were from an order designed specifically to help people and what had they done? They’d strapped you to a pole and left you in the nearby dragon’s field.
That great red beast that had approached you licking his lips had suddenly begun to squeal in terror as you’d decided to use that one spell you had never been good at to save yourself. Instead of switching places with your enemy to release yourself… as all the popular white witches had done with ease, you’d mucked it about so that he’d changed into a human and become bound to you! You had learnt too that the pair of you were connected by some invisible and chain and that if you were more then ten feet apart, something would magnetise you back together. Your first whole day had been about trying to escape each other but then you had started to get to know each other.
Now, as Reno reminded you with a smarmy comment, the idea was to reach the head of the guild in the nearest town and get him to sort the problem out. You’d questioned what could happen to the dragon after it, but Reno reminded you that he was an excellent flyer. Even so, after six days of strolling through the woods and coping with his complaints on how pathetic human digestive systems were, his current rendition of a rude dragon song was just so cringe-worthy you couldn’t help but scream.
“WILL YOU SHUT UP ALREADY? Damn it Reno all you do is complain about how much smaller you are compared to what you had originally been. I don’t care! If you just kept your mouth shut in the first place I wouldn’t have panicked like that. You should have told me that you were going to free me… I do speak dragon you know!” You snapped at him, making the red head start slightly. For a moment he seemed upset that you were telling him off but then his rebellious manner flashed and you grimaced at the fire forming in his eyes.
“Excuse me kid? You’re telling a mighty dragon what to do now huh? If I’d have known you were from that order I’d have done so… but if I recall you couldn’t stop screaming in terror at my magnificent! Like I could eat a puny white-witch like you, imagine the indigestion!” Reno chuckled in amusement as he grabbed his stomach and began to pretend to groan in agony. The road through the forest was getting longer and the sun was starting to drop, you had enough supplies to stay one more night but you were not really looking forward to.
Out here there were a lot of bandits and the last encounter with a bear had ended up with you turning it into a carnivorous rabbit and Reno getting mauled whilst you were stuck up a tree! Just thinking about that kind of thing happening again was making you feel nervous and Reno was picking up on it and getting irritated by it. He began to act more cocky as you got more anxious and the sky got darker, finally Reno decide he’d had enough and stepped off the road to a clearing and slumped down beside a tree… that was it he was not going to move and you had no choice. After setting up camp with him and sitting down by the fire where your teapot was warming and your stew boiling, you found yourself being smiled at by Reno.
“Are you going to torment me again for being so nervous? I can’t help it you know… this area is filled with bandits and you know I’m not fantastic in a situation where there isn’t an army against my back!” You groaned nervously before checking your magic metre and groaning. In order to be accepted by the guild you had your powers restricted so you could never do any harm, but it could be troublesome in dangerous places and you only had enough left now to perform the spell needed in the antidote. You groaned as you thumbed the pendant and then took a tin cup from your bag and poured some tea into it. “Did you want it with lemon or milk?”
“That’s what I’m smiling at… you can get really wound up by me one minute then cool off the next. I don’t know many humans that could put up with me so long! You’re also really kind and I know you’re sparing your magic so you can sort this problem out.” He smiled thoughtfully toward you before taking the cup and ignoring your question, swallowing it all down in a hefty gulp. He then gave one of his friendly smiles and stretched himself out against a tree. “I wish you were a dragon you know… we’d have much more fun!”
‘Much more fun?’ You mind repeated and you shook your head at him. He was becoming more and more talkative the more you travelled and it took quite some getting used to. Always you wondered what he meant when he said you should be like him… if only because the last person to say that to you had been a dark mage you’d fallen for on your first mission. You’d defeated that guy of course… but you’d felt foolish for liking him and you were sure that same feeling was developing with this dragon.
After stew you packed up everything but your sleeping bags and took your dagger to sit under your covers. Reno gave a snort and hiccupped a flame before settling against the tree with a blanket over him. Sleep came quickly and you were enjoying a very comfortable dream about cake and having tea with your sister in town… gossiping about boys… when you felt very warm and realised that something was cuddling up against you. When you opened an eye you noticed that Reno’s blanket was over you and he’d stoked the fire again before hooking around you in the blankets. You were startled until you realised that you had been shivering quite violently. Reno remained asleep however so you did not wake up fully and simply returned to a blissful sleep, blushing that the dragon could be so thoughtful towards you.
In the morning the pair of you got up early and Reno was already sitting back against the tree… waiting impatiently! When you got back on the road he seemed more subdued and interested in asking you questions about yourself. You tried to get answers off of him but he was nonchalant about everything, as usual. Walking together you both felt surprisingly comfortable in the other’s company and when you reached the gatehouse of the nearest town and stepped inside, you felt suddenly very anxious.
“I didn’t realise you could cram so many humans in one street.” Reno chuckled fondly before holding your hand, making you blush and leading you through the swathes. There were so many people that you felt quite claustrophobic, but they all moved swiftly away from Reno’s flashing eyes and his fiery red hair as if he were some sort of demon. He kept a snarl on his face and whenever he spotted a troublemaker in the crowd he would pause and eye them up for a minute so that they understood he’d noticed them. It seemed to take forever before the bustling street vendors were out of sight and there were fewer people milling about behind you. “Must be market day.”
“Uh… thanks for holding onto me… I would have been really lost amongst all of that.” You blushed nervously as you let go of his hand. Reno’s hand reached back for you until he realised this and quickly turned his head aside, simply brushing the whole thing off as sensible. You walked a little closer to him, flattered by the sensitivity he was showing as you both reached the tall tower of the guild and then noted the sign on the door. “GONE TO LUNCH!”
“That’s not a bad idea _____, it’ll mean we have more chance of catching him after and can have a rest and think about the situation. I mean… you wouldn’t give me the antidote straightaway, I’d turn huge and destroy the town by accident. Or I’d have my head cut off by the guard.” Reno chuckled and you grimaced in annoyance. He started walking off towards a nearby tavern but once he got too far away, you were suddenly tugged back to land on your backside and dragged away. Reno paused however when you swore at him, realised his mistake and then quickly hurried back to help you up. Once more he took your hand in his and the pair of you entered the tavern.
The tavern patrons were all very friendly and when they realised you were a white witch of the guild, they gave you the best seats and a nice meal for free. They even offered to rent you a room, as showing good favour to the guild brought luck to people, but you informed them you were unsure of your answer. They looked to Reno a little more cautiously however as he ordered spicy food and gorged himself whilst you ate something more easy on the stomach. When Reno had finished stuffing his face he settled down to have a nap and you shook your head at him. But by then a waitress had come over to collect your plates and chuckled gently at you.
“He’s quite a catch! I think the pair of you make a really cute couple… how did you meet?” She questioned and you ended up blushing thickly and nearly burying your head under the table in embarrassment. Just what could you say to this girl? What kind of story would make sense to her? Did you really look good as a couple?
“Oh… uh… I was helping his village out and as a debt he decided to accompany me to the guild and keep me out of trouble. We’re not a couple though…” You grimaced, gosh did that sound awful! You looked toward Reno but he was fast asleep, the waitress however paused to eye him up carefully. At that moment a strange fire burnt within you, a jealousy that she was daring to consider flirting with Reno and you grinned as you realised that he was a dragon and she would certainly get a shock if he transformed in front of her.
But the waitress moved on and you elbowed Reno awake. With a choking sound he coughed himself awake before grumbling at you for bothering him. The pair of you then stood up and paced toward the tower. This time the sign was off the door and you both headed up the spiralling stairs at a gentle pace with smiles on your face. However, Reno once again marched too far ahead as you began to struggle and suddenly you were tugged forward and then catapulted up the stairs after him. Reno spun at the top of the stairs to see what was happening, only for you to crash into him. The pair of you rolled into the wizard’s office and landed with you straddling your companion and your lips locked on his. The pair of you stared at each other in surprise before you pulled yourself up to the laughter of the mage sitting by the cauldron.
“Mixed up switching spells certainly have odd quirks to them!” The old man chuckled beneath his cowl. You scuttled to his side and explained the situation to him; the old man tapped his bald chin with bony fingers and then looked toward Reno, who remained lying perplexed on the floor. He could sense something going on within the dragon’s mind and began to chuckle gently. “I can separate you both easily but for him to turn back into a dragon… you’ll have to travel to the Dragon Mages in the Burning Sands of the south… they’re the only ones with that know-how.”
“You mean Reno will be stuck as a human forever if we don’t go to them?” You questioned your eyes wide with surprise and sorrow. Part of you was happy he would be with you longer as a human, but another part of you was angry because you knew Reno would never stop complaining about it. The wizard grimly nodded his head however and Reno suddenly stood up from the ground. He strolled over with a cocky grin and then gently patted your shoulder before lifting your hand and giving you a gentle little kiss.
“I would quite enjoy going on a proper adventure with you _____, dragon form or not. Who knows what we might find out or how close we might become.” Reno chuckled before holding your hand tightly in his. The wizard grinned, he knew that the dragon was already quite firmly attached to you, magic spell or not, and that this could be the start of something powerful… if you’d accept it.
“Alright…” You muttered nervously, still blushing as you looked toward Reno’s cheeky smile. Somehow you couldn’t help but get the feeling he just wanted to spend more time with you... grumbling or not. So you nodded your head and gripped Reno’s hand tightly. “Separate us and we’ll both start our new journey.”

He's my third favorite character from final fantasy. First is a tie with Cloud Strife and Zack Fair. Lol.
