For some reason I saw Flowey as a different consciousness than Asriel, y'know? Maybe cause I dislike Flowey but love the smol goat kid.

Without his soul, he had no Empathy, no ability to understand the emotions and motivations of others. Β Coupled with the resets, doing the same thing over and over till Frisk fell, and... it broke him, so much so that even getting a new soul didn't fix things, till Frisk rekindled his empathy and in turn made him face why he was doing the things he was doing.
Till that happened, even though he KNEW what he was doing was wrong, he COULDN'T CARE, even if he still wanted to, which he did at the end.
