Description
Many of you might know this big fella, H.P. Lovecraft's famous comatose alien god. I can't tell you how many times I see the same old version of him in illustrations, so I tried to be a little more creative with him while still holding true to Lovecraft's descriptions somewhat. (added a wing in Painter, 'cause it was bugging me AND because there's no way I'm gonna change the original sketch and color the whole thing again)This is one of the many concept drawings I'm making for my new book I'm putting together, in conjunction with my illustration classes at CCAD. The project is going to require a TON of concept work and illustrations, but hopefully I'll have the book finished in time to debut it at Mid-Ohio Comic Con in October.

A nice variation, for sure! I like how the looks of a fish-man and an octopus-face are combined in this design.
The swirly parts are a nice touch, too!

The swirls were such a good choice. I feel like they can't not be pulsing and undulating just as much as I bet those tentacles are.

I'm so glad the runes implied something pulsating, it's such a challenge to convey little movements like that, and I was afraid I wouldn't be able to pull it off

Although not my favorite character from the mythos, he's certainly a crowd-pleaser and I definitely enjoyed drawing him. I really enjoy your Lovecraft creature sculptures! I recognize your work from Spectrum as well, really cool stuff!

It's a weird tie between the Elder Race, Nyarlathotep, and the Flying Polyps. I like Nyarlathotep's sneaky way of messing with things, and I like the sheer crazy of the Polyps. I've always found the Elder Race interesting because they seem to be the only things to ever inspire fear in Cthulhu's minions and fight him to a standstill, which I'm sure is no easy feat.

When I was re-reading the short story for descriptions, I couldn't believe how many times he describes Chtulhu as "flabby" xD

Thanks man, I think a lot of people just go by the bare-bones sentences where Lovecraft describes the basic face, wings, and skin. There's a ton of room for interpretation, so I tried to make him look more like an alien deity and not just a big octopus-faced green giant.

Honestly, the descriptions I've heard of Cthulhu are all second hand from people who have actually read the Lovecraft stories. But I too got the impression that its supposed to be an entity that takes a different form for everyone. Creating a monster that chills people regardless of having multiple interpretations is, to me, the mark of truly ingenious writing.
