Description Today I found out that it's impossible to draw a Barbourofelis from this angle without him ending up with a derp face.

So this nice fellow is basically the Miocene love-child of a bear and a lion with steak knives attached to its face. But it's pretty darn rad, and that skull is fairly terrifying.
Barbourofelis is another one of those weird sabre-toothed cats that actually isn't a true cat... depending on which textbook or paper you're reading, of course. The placement of nimravids and barbourofelids within the feliforms seems to be all over the place. I'm sure they were true cats a few years ago, and now they are not. Sometimes I just don't understand you, paleontology.

As far I remember, nimravids are currently classified as a primitive feliforms, meanwhile the barbourofelids are very close to the true cats... however, I understand you, after all these animals are differentiated using sutile features of the teeth and the cranial bones.
By the way, nice images of extinct mammals

Yeah, I think I remember reading that at some point as well. They're all very interesting animals regardless of taxonomy. But then again, carnivorous mammals are my favourite, so I'm pretty biased haha.

And thank you I hope to upload a lot more paleo-stuff soon!

Indeed, carnivorous mammals are very interesting, and there is a lot of extinct species to illustrate.
