Description
Tipula sp. Craneflies are those "big mosquitoes" that occasionally make their way into human dwellings. They are often associated with water or humid places, where their larvae develop. Unlike their mosquito cousins, they are completely harmless to people.Delving deeper into the world of insect illustration.
Initially I had thought about making a series of photorealistic insect portraits. I did this one and the idea immediately deflated. Audience response in my other social media wasn't good, and I can see why: It's no different from what I did with the Costa Rican fish series.
So, instead I'm going to do a series of more traditional, informative plates concerning insect anatomy: legs and tarsii, wings, head and antennae and finally, life cycles. A lot more bugs to come in the future!
Enjoy. Also here's a little gif with the illustration process: imgur.com/YNZq3Lu

What a weird face! I'll have to take a close look at the crane flies here. Great work!

Thank you.! Not all craneflies have an elongated rostrum though. Not sure what kinds you may find in South Africa.
