Description
A female Ornate Box Turtle. I found her walking up to my hawk, so I picked her up, got a few photos, then moved her into the woods, far from harm's way.Feel free to use my photos as references and stock. It's a good thing you got to that turtle when you did. When animals casually walk toward each other with no regard for the food chain, you're seconds away from a fable breaking out.

Haha, she was well within reach of my bird. He had no clue what to do about her though. He probably just though it was a strange walking rock! I ended up finding a second turtle not long after that though! That one managed to find its way to one of our other birds. I found that one on it's back. I think that bird was a little more curious about the turtle!

I would have thought the birds would know what turtles are. I've heard of some raptors dropping turtles from high up to crack them open. It might be a behavioral adaptation and not something that they have the instinct to do though.

I would suspect most of our birds have never seen a turtle before, or at least have never had a close up experience with one. To my knowledge, its only a handful of species that do that whole dropping turtles from high up thing. I wish I had seen how the second turtle ended up on its back though

It isn't completely intuitive, so it make sense that not all birds can do that.
Maybe after outracing a rabbit, she tried to beat a peregrine falcon. Since she was turned over, this fable must have been about *staying* humble.

Haha, there needs to be a children's book about that now too!
