Hmm.. I am kinda stuck in this one in regards to light and shadow in the face, am I completely off and what can I improve?The hair? Does it look realistic?
And worst of all... The fabric...

changing the background color would help you to see the depth of your painting, i guess
i have no idea about your ref photo, but stronger lighting might also help.
and i'd like to add that i am not a professional artist, these are my personal thoughts. i hope, i had been useful.

Hehe, the gray background is going to get more depth itself, I am doing it all on one layer, and later it will turn into a garden or something
Hmm.. Yeah, you might be right in regards to the stronger lightning, it will bring out the contrasts better

Well, I've found out that the one-layer thing actually feels a lot easier for me because I all too often accidentially draw on the wrong layer - and it keeps my pc from crashing all the time xD
