Description OH THAT’S ME inking a double page spread for EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT: IRIS #1 - click on AspenStore for more information!

I wish I could ink faster, argh. Today I just ink one page and a half daily.

For a long time I used two brands of pen: the Sakura Micron and Mitsubishi. For ink, the past ten years I used a Brazilian brand of ink called Acrilex. I still haven't familiarized myself with any particular brand of brush -- I'm still looking for my favorite. If you give a full-view, you can see the mark and texture created by the movement of my brush.

The tools should be tested and chosen individually by each person. If you don't work well with nibs then try pens. If you don't like pens then use brush.

Don't try to get the same tools that your favorite artist uses thinking you're going to be able to make it just like them because those tools work for them. It's technical skills, and everyone has a different kind of skill. Develop your own techniques by practicing and testing things out!

Thanks for stopping by!

Wow, very interesting! And very good inking as well! I have always liked the effects of a brush as well. I'm mostly a penciller, but I have inked some of my own works, so I was wondering if you have ever tried the Faber-Castell pens for inking? I've used them a few times and I think that out of all the pens I have used (I haven't really focused on inking enough to have practiced with a brush), the Faber-Castell pens have been my favorite.

Ultimamente venho aprimorando minhas técnicas com o nanquim usando pincel, que aprendi a usar olhando desenhos como esse!

I love how lively you did the hair!!! I really love using synthetic brushes but my hand isn't steady enough to do fine lines. I'm an aspiring inker and if you can please critique my inkwork, I'd really appreciate it. More power!!!

One question:
does the ink go directly on the original pencils? :/

Yes!

Thank you..
So, one more for the road :
what happens when you maka a mistake while inking, or really f*ck up a detailed (pencils) piece, what then? Any tricks? Do you warm up, try it on a copy first or something similar?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

eDufRancisco In reply to wogule [2011-02-15 17:09:12 +0000 UTC]

If the mistake isn't that big you can use some white inks to correct it, or make a patch... Now if you mess somebody else’s pencil that can be a problem because a pro inker must have some drawing ability and be a capable artist in their own right. Before start inking, you have to understand the drawing, if there is any doubt about some details just asks the penciler about it. Then always make a copy in high quality resolution; at least you can start over if you mistake.

Do not load too much ink onto nib and brush, and your hands are likely to get inky as well so you need to be careful not to get smudges and fingers mark on the artwork. Use paper towers to clean it and make sure to clean your brushes and nibs as soon as you’ve finished with them. It takes a lot of time and practise to hone your inking skills, so try not to rush, you'll need to take the time and care to do the job well buddy.

Thank you very kindly for the input.
It'll come handy the time when I'll be inking my pencils, if I find the courage that is ;D

Actually I would like to know what type/size of brush you use. I'm looking for a good, durable brush with a bit of spring that holds its shape well.

You really do have a very good technique--it is a pleasure to see!

Hey buddy, I use Acrilex, a Brazilian brand of ink; thanks!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HCui In reply to eDufRancisco [2010-06-30 01:14:50 +0000 UTC]

Wow, so even now when everyone in the comic industry is going digital, you still ink it traditionally (by hand)? Is that harder for working with other people who are coloring it digitally?

Also, I can't seem to find Acrilex anywhere online. Where do they sell it? Do I have to go to Brazil?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

eDufRancisco In reply to HCui [2010-06-30 11:41:51 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I use to do traditionally; it's hard to find really good colorists, most of them don't even know how to work shading and light, textures, color scheme, and no matter how you struggle with the line-art to look good, if the colorist sucks, your work will sucks too!

This is a nice example of (basic) know-how that a colorist should have, it is a watercolor made by my friend Roger Cruz: [link] - first they should learn how to do it traditionally and then digitally.

I think they don’t export that brand of ink yet!

Woah that guy is SO good! I love that volcano.
So if so many colorists suck, how do they even get hired in the first place? Don't you have to have a good fine-art background?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

eDufRancisco In reply to HCui [2010-07-02 15:07:12 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I guess; how they get hired I don't really know.
