I don't understand the meaning of this dialogue between Ash and his coach.

Ash, his coach and his cousin, Kristofferson, are playing whackbat - a game played by the children of the movie Fantastic Mr. Fox. Ash's father was the best whackbat player the school ever had. Ash isn't very good. Kristofferson has never played whackbat before, since he went to a different school across the river before he moved in with his cousin Ash, so it's pretty amazing that he can play so well for a first-timer. The coach attributes his skill to his relation to Ash's father, but Ash points out that this can't possibly be the case, considering that Kristofferson is not even related to him by blood, and is a relative on his mother's side.
