Description
Let me start by saying:Last night?
BEST. CONCERT. OF. MY. YOUNG. LIFE.
It’s no understatement to say that Gorillaz changed my afore-mentioned life. Perhaps in no way it wouldn’t have been changed by something of the same ilk later (tsk, what? They have an ilk of their own!) ... but, as it were, Gorillaz was the first time I ever saw animation do anything truly dark, and so they’ve earned a permanent place in my heart.
At the age of eleven, the “darkest” things I’d seen were The Nightmare Before Christmas and a Dragonball Z hentai website my brother and I found by accident. Good times. I can remember everything about the moment I happened upon Gorillaz debut single Clint Eastwood on TV in 2001. It disturbed the absolute bajeezus out of me, but I couldn’t look away.
Now that I’m older, I can appreciate the animation and the music, because both are outrageously brilliant.
I’ll admit I’ve never been a hardcore fan. I don’t know every tiny detail of lore surrounding the characters, I always considered it too much of a commitment. But these past few days? I’ve been making up for my laziness. It’s incredible how little information it takes for their video clips to start making perfect, beautiful sense, and for Murdoc to grow on you like a suspicious rash, and for the utterly unique blend of genre and culture that is their music to send your brain into complete rapture.
And now, having seen their concert, I can appreciate something even better about this band that I only truly grasped last night. The team behind Gorillaz are lovely, decent people. I wish there were more like them in the creative industry. Their collaboration knows no bounds, they foster the talent of others, lend their own talents generously, and they are genuine.
Aaanyway, in conclusion, I’ve drawn the awesome foursome a few times for myself years ago in Hewlett’s style, but now I thought I’d try them in mine. Speaking of Hewlett, though, I’m not sure if you’ve ever noticed his influence on my style, but it’s certainly in there if you look for it
If I don’t stop talking now I never will.
wait, wait, don’t go – 2D always scared me but now I know him better I feel so sorry for him, he’s so hapless and sweet – now it’s Russel who scares me... exorcism central and all that – Noodle is BITCHIN’, I feel proud to be the same age as her IDK why.. Muuurdoooc... unnnnn.. do not want and yet I do.. so conflictiiing... actually, you know who I do want?
Damon Albarn.

Noodle always confuses me Because I can never grasp how old she is at any given moment. If she was 10 in 2001, though, that makes her 21, but that also makes 2-D like...30.

I know Noodle's a girl Correct me if I'm wrong, but Hewlett didn't start drawing her with breasts until Phase 3, so I'm just assuming she was flat-chested until age 19/20 xD

I think I have a similar connection to Gorillaz as you do. To me it's kind of the feeling and mood their music and art gives me. It's about the world these characters live in, how they act. Every time I grind my head more into the wonder of Gorillaz, I gotta snap myself out of it because I know I'm digging too deep. But there's that sort of atmosphere to it all, and memories of the videos with the environments. Everything is so dark and gritty, it's just so different from our user-friendly, dumbed down, sensor happy world. I wish I could live in these worlds you see the Gorillaz characters in. I don't like living in this world the way it is, it's all so fucked up from all the problems people started causing, that it's gotten too trigger happy with the law and you can't do anything interesting. But the characters in Gorillaz pretty much do whatever they want, nobody cares. Anyway, I love your art, it's really astounding! you really hit the characters dead on.

Well, let ME just start by saying: FUCKING FUCKTY FUCK FUCK FUCKING YES. FFFUUUUUCCKKKKK.
I am right there with you on this. The first time I saw 'Clint Eastwood', I was equal measures creeped out and fascinated. I didn't know whether I liked it or not, because of the hip hop and because of how dark it was, but... I still kinda LOVED it and it really stuck with me all these years. I think I had heard that song maybe twice up until very recently, and the chorus and pieces of the animation still stuck in my head so vividly that when I finally watched it again the other day it felt as though it had only been a couple of weeks. NEEDLESS TO SAY it left an impression.
Sadly that was my only taste of Gorillaz until I later saw the video clips to Feel Good Inc. and DARE. And it was kind of the same deal; I didn't hear anything more for ages afterwards... But they left a big impression on me again...
AND THEN my sister bought me Demon Days and I fell in love and THEN you drew this and I FELL IN LOVE and since I saw this I've been dutifully watching every video clip in order. (Just saw Stylo yesterday (crazy!!) and now I'm watching On Melancholy Hill.) Where do you read up on the 'lore'? I want the videos to start making perfect, beautiful sense to me.
You know it's strange; for years I've had this image in my head of a man playing a bass guitar, shirtless, under dim red lights in a huge dark building, with girls at his feet. I guess I figured I dreamed it or something. But then I watched Feel Good Inc. again and my heart just shot up into my throat because it was Murdoc. I can't really explain how I felt at that moment or why. I think I never noticed how much of an effect the Gorillaz had on me since I saw that first video clip all that time ago.
BUT. That story aside.
This is FUCKING amazing. I don't even know what to actually even say about it.
Okay, ummm, I love how you did their eyes. And their - and - EVERYTHING oh I'm failing miserably at knowing what to say D:
But can I just say...Murdoc's mouth is a high point for me xD dear lord...
SORRY ABOUT MY TL;DR FAIL COMMENT. PLEASE KNOW I LOVE THIS

I have to say, Eba you continue to amaze me. I love your work, and I love the Gorillaz. My girlfriend and I were just talking about them like crazy, and then I sign onto Devart, and what's sitting in my inbox but this masterpiece?
I'll admit, it took me time to get into them, when I first saw the Clint Eastwood vid on Cartoon Network, I was like 'Great, another stupid cartoon' and didn't bother to watch more than about 5 seconds of it. But going back now, I can't help but adore the art and music and desperately wish I could hit my younger self over the head for being such a stupid girl. Oh well.
Long rant was long... Wonderful piece, you help remind me of why I love them. And yes, Murdoc is a suspicious rash. You might want to get that checked out.
