Description I was about to post a tip about selecting using a 3 line script (eweee the python console ya know) , but then I thought "Such a simple thing as selecting by name", it must be possible without script-fu.

Of course you can arrange your objects by layers, group or non-such but every method has its limits, often selecting by name can be an efficient way to grab duplicates.

1) head for the outliner.
2) Type the beginning of the name of the object(s!) you want in the search area (I typed "inn", bottom left).
3) Hover over the outliner window and press [A]. Aaaha, this highlights all names but does not select anything. No worry we're almost there.
4) Right click *on the name* of any pre-selected object (not the name of a mesh, not the icon nearby, *the name*).

DONE!

Catch: yea for some reason this doesn't always work for me. If not instead of pressing [A] I press [B] which creates a box selection instead allowing to select all the names. Well, just in case...

Tip applies to Blender 2.6x
