Description
Alright, so I've been looking for an excuse to post these guys for a while now.Β Setesh and Qebehsenuef are great and I love drawing them, but I always feel bad for drawing them.Setesh is a main character in the first book of TCotC, but I always worry he's stealing the show -- he's my favorite character, but he's just one of many who have major arcs. The Neverending Epilogue (the "sequel" I just call Book 2) shifts Setesh towards being the central character that everything kind of bounces off of, too. It also develops the character of Qebehsenuef, who appears in Book 1 but isn't really a central character.
Anyway. Enough self-invalidation -- these are a compiled set of doodles from the past few weeks. Qebehsenuef is a "comfort character" that makes me feel better when I draw him, and -- like I said earlier -- Setesh is my favorite character. I find myself wanting to draw these two a lot. Because of their limited role in Book 1, I don't really want to throw them at you guys... But to heck with it, I guess.
Setesh's Core Mechanics
Right, so, this is before Setesh (while he's still called Pamu, too) gets his scars in Book 1 -- so, it is technically some Book 1 material for you guys! In the storyline of TCotC, he struggles greatly with being the unwilling aspect of the deity that tried to kill him... And a lot of people mistake him for Set, too, which doesn't really help. He gets some inhibitor bracers that help control his magical outbursts and make him look more "normal," but this has some unfortunate effects on his psyche -- normally, he and Set have sort of a mental "block" between them that prevents their thoughts from outright bleeding into each other, but in order to fully internalize all of the godly magic that's coming out of their shared body the bracers kind of have to break this blockage.
Cue massive identity crisis.
Yeah, so, those bracers don't last long. Pamu eventually comes to terms with the fact that he and Set are in fact aspects now, and that this does make him a deity -- this is how he adopts the name "Setesh," actually! The bracers come off, and, funnily enough, Setesh finds out that he's actually stable enough to control his powers now. All he needed to do was accept who he is now, and that he can't change the past.
The "Set-O-Vision" thing on the far right is a concept of how we'd be able to see Set in the comic once he and Setesh are stuck in the same body. Set will occasionally get control, but when he's not in control he's still semi-conscious and will sometimes to react to things Setesh encounters. I wanted a way to still have Set's facial expressions visible without him actually being there, you know? What do you guys think of it-? I quite like it!
Setesh and Qebehsenuef
Love at first sight! Or not. Qebehsenuef really did not like Setesh when they first met.
After the events of Book 1, Horus takes on Setesh as his apprentice -- Setesh has absolutely no idea how to actually be a deity, after all. He's got the magic and look down pat, sure, but he can't fight other deities or handle godly duties to save his life. So, as much as he'd hate to admit it, he's glad to have someone teaching him these things...
Which immediately puts him at odds with the normally good-natured Qebehsenuef. Qeb (and half of Duat, honestly) is pretty suspicious of Setesh outright because, well, he looks a helluva lot like Set, and Set is... Well, Set's got a pretty bad reputation. Qebehsenuef also wanted his father (Horus) as his own mentor, as he's of that age range (young adult) where he would be apprenticed to another god, too. So, when Setesh suddenly robs him of that chance, Qeb is ticked -- and, well, as you can see here, he acts out. He acts like a real jerk to Setesh, which is hilariously out of character for this fluffy bird -- and stupid, too, since Setesh is, like, twice his size.
Thankfully, Horus is able to talk some sense into his son. He suggests that Qeb ask Setesh to tell him what he's learned every day so that Qeb can still be included in the training, even if it's unofficial.
After such a rocky start to their relationship, both Qeb and Setesh are kind of reluctant to interact all that much... But they eventually work things out. They start working together more frequently, too, and Qeb gets dragged along on a couple of adventures!
And, uh... Qeb's starts to feel a little... Funny after a while. He feels more drawn to this one guy than any girl he's ever met-!
Future Qebehsenuef
I have so much story planned ahead of the end of Book 1. So much, in fact, that Qebehsenuef gets an entire wardrobe change and feather makeover due to story events.
This particular look of his comes after Setesh completes his apprenticeship under Horus... And when Qeb decides he wants to be Setesh's apprentice! It's still in the concept phase, and it may be subject to change... But I like this look. I was just practicing getting his new crest feathers and getup just right.
