do u use a transparent medium to thin the paint out and make that transparent red?

eightoutside In reply to mudgey [2006-09-13 07:08:42 +0000 UTC]
Not really, I mean sometimes I'll thin the paint out a little with water but that's about it. I find that if I apply it with a large wall-painting brush I can maintain a good level of transparency. Thanks for asking though, I like questions like that And thanks for the fave

I agree that this is a lovely use of texture, I can almost feel it through the screen. As always, your artwork is amazing.

Thank you, I wish I had the patience to apply more layers to all my work, that's how I build texture

it looks so corosive and oxidised, the title is perfectly fitting.

I know, it makes me think of corregated iron with holes rusted through it. My fiancee came up with the title 'wall' and I opened it up a bit

I really love industrial textures and you are right its very corregated iron, but I wasn't going to be so blunt about it!

thank you very much. the colours were originally horrible, they didn't work together so I painted over them with a translucent layer of red, it's a method I've used a few times before and it helps when a painting just doesn't seem to be working

I use this method too...it creates that translucent layer and the effect is often a very good one.
so good luck and go on like that

yeah it has a kind of leveling effect, bringing the whole piece to a place where all the seperate elements of it share a common factor, it's certainly helps to tie together a piece that feels like it's suffering from being fragmented.

absolutely...I especially like the depth, a painting acquires, when I'm working with many layers, so it's one of my favourite styles....
btw. I read your last journal entry, which was quite iteresting...you talked about films...I found "Beeing John Malkovich" very inspiring and I thought about that one alot. Maybe you've seen it already.... or maybe not...

yeah, I've seen it not for ages though, actually I should watch it again, it might give me some ideas about outer-body experiences

Terry Gilliam (I think from Monthy Python)...a great movie, if you don't mind a kind of negative ending. In my opinion worth to see it .....
The movie combines a 1984-like reality with dream sequences of the main protagonist... its really excellent....

yeah, I watched if for the first time in ages a few days ago, anything directed by David Lynch is great for weirdness and confusion too. I like to listen to music while I'm painting, I have to be in the right mood though because if the music I'm listening too doesn't match my mood when I start painting it just doesn't work, of course there are a few bands who can change my mood in a matter of minutes.

David Lynch is great...I'm painting always while listening to music, but it has to be a certain kind (like radiohead etc.)...has to be strange or at least not "easy listening", then the mood fits always...it helps "turning off" the brain..the rest is just process-orientated, I often can't even explain what I'm doing...like an altered state of mind or a transcending experience... if I put myself under pressure, nothing works...
It seems that your approach is similar......yeah weirdness and confusion!!

eightoutside In reply to Birgit-Zartl-Art [2006-06-25 09:29:42 +0000 UTC]
Yeah absolutely, trying to turn off the brain so your part in the creative process is sort of unconscious. You should read this [link] I was talking to him about this.

thanks for the link...that is really impressive (I looked at the series as well), since I'm "beyond words" concerning my paintings...I wish, I could express more verbally...but it's also the nature of the unconscious...not easy to put in words and kind of ephemeral....
