Description
This is probably one of my most favorite cosplay photos ever; my sister as one of the most awesome Rikkus and myself as Lulu. This photo was taken in September 2006
I know the picture is quite big, but when I resized it before I thought that it loses too much detail, so I decided to upload it in the original size. And yet it is still more blurry than the original, which is crystal clear in photoshop...

Wow, That's utterly amazing. I must agree with one the most awesome cosplays for both Lulu and Rikku. Bravo!

How do you keep Lulu's dress up? It looks like there is no support with the sleeves...

I just started making this costume myself and was wondering what fabric you used for the dress section. I was also curious how you got the design on the dress section(aka the place where most people use lace).

That is the best Lulu costume I've ever seen. I have a huge Lulu wall scroll right next to me on the wall and I just keep staring between the two. I have NEVER seen someone get the belts right. Usually they just get a bunch and throw them on...you have it like...exactly right. And the lace is also correct! The only thing I can really see as being off is the fur consistency and perhaps color.

Thank you very much! I know, the fur also is what I am happy with the least. But at the time I made this costume, this was the closest I could find. It is to gray and looks a bit too fake fur, unless it is combed.
Either way, I thank you very much for your comment and also for actually pointing out flaws. That is very honest and very much appreciated. I wish there were more people like that in the cosplay community, but everyone is so darn touchy when it comes to helpful critique.

You're welcome. I feel like people are indeed too touchy when it comes to criticism. As long as the criticism doesn't cross the line into cruelty, it should be welcomed, I think. I'm not really sure about the cosplay community because I'm not really involved, mostly because I am really picky about costumes and therefore would never be satisfied with anything I made. But yeah...great job again.

You are both amazing cosplayers. You have te belts on Lulu's skirt almost exact to detail. I"m planning a Lulu cosplay in the future, what did you use for the belt skirt? Like did you buy belts, or did you do custom leeather work? Was it a seperate piece from the rest of the dress, and how did you keep it on/from falling off when you walk? The dress looks like you used leather, did you?

I used fake leather for the whole thing. The belts are self made. I bought sheets of cardboard (like you get it at Hobby Lobby), cut long strips and then covered with the fake leather. I wrapped the leather around the cardboard tightly and glued it on the back side.
To keep the beltskirt from falling off I did it this way:
I made a frame to attach the belts onto. The frame was nothing else than long strips of leather, folded twice (to have 3 layers of leather) to make it really strong. I had to cheaply hand stitch and glue it. The belts were sewn/glued to the frame and the frame was attached to a belt that I wore around my waist underneath the corset. This belt was made just like the frame, but only two layers so it wouldn't be too thick.
This way the weight of the belts was held by my body, not by the actual dress.
Along the sides of the frame for the beltskirt I put velcro, also along the front edges of the dress so I could connect the beltskirt with the dress and make it look like one piece.
I know my explanations usually suck majorly, so if this doesn't help you I can try to draw a quick thingie in photoshop!

Do you maybe have a pattern for the lace? I am making my own lace from just bits and pieces and dying them, but I just cannot find a good reference of what bits I should use.

wow...just wow...really amazing!
i have a question though...do the belts go right around your legs or are they attached to something else under the dress?
i plan to cosplay lulu in october and im a little stumped about the belt situation lol
though i must say your creativeness for using cardboard and pleather is truely unique
well done!

The entire belt part you see is made in the shape of some kind of apron, which I was wearing on my waist. The sides of it were lined with velcro, as well as the front edges of the dress.
So I had to put on the belt apron first, and I was carrying its weight on my body.
Then I put on the dress and attached the edges to the velcro on the sides of the belt apron to connect them and made them look like they are one.
Does that explanation help? oO
If not, let me know and I will try it again XD

Great costumes Love the Lulu. I'm curious, what did you do to get the lacey pattern on her skirt and sleeves? I'm working on my own Lulu costume right now and I'm debating what to use for it. My friend said that I should buy fabric, paint the design on it and then sew this to the skirt and sleeves. If you could let me know what you did for yours, that would be great

EileenGalvin In reply to deathsentence1560 [2008-07-12 23:52:24 +0000 UTC]
I painted the lace pattern directly onto the dress. I used the Games Workshop / Citadel colors for that since they are very high quality.
I outlined the whole painted pattern with a thin black line afterwards to give it a little more of a 3D look.
I hope this helps you!

i agree the ones you can buy at the moment are really bad not accurate at all. i am doing lulu next year for a con and i was actually curious as to where you got or made the lace/embroidery along the edge of the dress cause that has been one of the bigger problems of mine. your help is greatly appreciated

Actually I "simply" painted the lace along the edge. I used pictures (artworks) and the bit Vinyl figure of Lulu for reference. The paint I used was Games Workshop model paint [link]
