Usually the Unicorns would have stopped them in the movie but I think I know why they didn'tΒ

In the movie Twilight Sparkle fired a unicorn laser attack at one of them. But the Storm Guard blocked the attack with it's metal shield causing the bridge they were on to cave in to the river. My guess is the Storm Guards were given armor by someone to deal with the unicorns.

That explains way the unicorns got captured, but at least Alicorn Magic an still blast them

I kind of think Tempest and the Storm King knew that if the showed up the ponies let alone the princesses would not fire at them.
I kind of picture the Storm King is a bully who attacks small lessor kingdoms.
Such as if they in one of my fictional towns in the way they did they would get attacked with anti aircraft weapons.

I don't even know why Celestia, Twilight, Luna and Cadance didn't just fight back already, but I'm glad The Storm King, Tempest and the Army didn't know about Flurry Heart

I do find it dumb in the show how the three Princesses always get board sided by a enemy.
I think they might make what happened in the Crystal Empire into a episode plot possibly.
If it was my OC characters and someone showed up like the Storm King did a massive battle would break out.
