This is actually the design that I tossed out for contest. The one I submitted can be found here:

This one is still based mostly upon the men's uniforms of the American Revolution but with many more feminine attributes. I topped it off with a dainty hat, too!
The pants are a take on the 'short' uniform pants, while the boots are stiletto riding boots. The lace at the cuff ends the sleeve of a simple linen under shirt and the coat is a hybrid between a stiff outer bodice and men's military jacket; it's crested with a stiff wrap collar that I've seen on several "younger" dresses of the time.
I kept the colors light and rich, which might be what turned me off to the overall design...
