Description
My pencil drawing of my original photo of my horse Benjamin: AwaitingSorry for the poor quality scan. I am forced to use a camera
UPDATE: I have re-uploaded this drawing. Changes include more detail to the eye, darker shading to the muzzle, and an attempt to bring out the highlights of the mane.

I really like this drawing. I suppose in terms of critiquing, if I really dug for it I could say add a little detail to the eyes, maybe to the mane, but the fact is I wouldn't really want to see anything about it changed. It has a lovely soft, immediate feel, the face-on pose is a difficult one and very competently handled.
You can just feel this horse's presence and movement, that steady, solid, purposeful walk (do you have a carrot you'd like to give me..?)
I particularly like the handling of the muzzle, the graceful, solid and understated curve, the lovely bit of off-set white snip, the delicate small nostrils that still seem perfectly capable of bringing in enough air at the gallop for this handsome fellow.
The shading is subtle and precise. I love how much of the hand of the artist shows through this piece.
The absolute only concern I have is that the paper may not be good quality. Not too much of an issue once in a while or for practice sketches but good work deserves good paper.
Under-stated and beautiful. I hope you draw lots more.

Yeah. I deal with what I can too. I have a booklet of drawing paper... You've seen it I think, and it works pretty good. As for the kneading eraser, which are really nice to have for itty-bitty erasing to make shines on the mane or in the eyes, but, for now, I'd say don't worry about the eraser. lol I have one, and hardly need to use it-therefore is left back at home. But the occasional sometimes that I need it, I have to do without. lol

the form, and shading are good. there's something that keeps it from standing out and i'm having a hard time deciding what. some tighter shading on the face, and darkening the eyes would help. outlining is to be avoided like the plague. this looks like it was done on newsprint, though i could be wrong. some contrast could be gained by pulling some hilights out of the hair, and lightening some parts with a kneaded eraser.
again, i like this drawing. i think it shows some real talent.

yeah, the printer paper isn't doing you any favors lol. the best investment you can make is a 10$ pad of drawing paper and a 3$ kneaded eraser. strathmore drawing paper has always worked well for me. it has a very even tooth, allowing for very smooth shading and nice transitions.
